PART 7 – Daniel’s Name Was on the Guardianship Payment, and the Explanation He Gave Me Forced Me to Reconsider Everything

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The storage unit seemed suddenly smaller.

Lauren stared at the phone in my hand.

Marcus looked at the transaction.

I looked at Daniel's name.

The same man who had told me he hadn't stolen Ava's money had apparently authorized payment for an emergency guardianship proceeding.

“Call him,” I said.

Marcus shook his head.

“Rachel—”

“Call him.”

I dialed.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

“With Lauren.”

Silence.

“You found her?”

“Yes.”

“What did she tell you?”

“That she took some of the money.”

Daniel exhaled.

“How much?”

“She didn't say.”

“I can explain.”

“Did you authorize a guardianship payment?”

He went silent.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

“Because Ava is in danger.”

“From whom?”

“My mother.”

Lauren stepped closer.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel heard her voice.

“Lauren?”

“Yes.”

“You need to listen to Rachel.”

Lauren's expression hardened.

“Why should I?”

“Because the guardianship isn't for Margaret.”

I looked at Marcus.

Daniel continued.

“It's to protect Ava from Lauren.”

The room went silent.

Lauren's face drained of color.

“What?”

Daniel said, “I filed the emergency petition.”

“You did this?”

“I had no choice.”

“You used my name?”

“No.”

“You used Rachel's account.”

“I didn't.”

I stared at the transaction.

“Daniel, the bank says the authorization came from you.”

“I know.”

“Then explain it.”

“I didn't authorize that payment.”

Marcus looked at the transaction again.

“Could someone have used your credentials?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“My laptop was stolen two months ago.”

I looked at him.

“You never told me.”

“Because I thought I'd recovered everything.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

That answer felt like another stone added to the pile.

Daniel continued.

“My mother's been accessing my accounts.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I found login records.”

“Why didn't you report it?”

“Because I needed proof.”

I closed my eyes.

Everyone seemed to have a reason for keeping secrets.

Every secret had created another lie.

And every lie had pushed me further away from the truth.

“Daniel,” I said, “what exactly are you trying to protect Ava from?”

“Her mother's debt.”

Lauren flinched.

“What?”

“You borrowed against the trust.”

Lauren shook her head.

“I borrowed money to pay for Ava's treatment.”

“That isn't what the records show.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always have a choice.”

Lauren's eyes filled.

“You weren't there.”

Daniel's voice softened.

“I know.”

“No, you don't.”

I interrupted.

“Enough.”

Both of them stopped.

“I don't care who feels guilty right now. I want facts.”

Marcus nodded.

“That would help.”

I looked at Lauren.

“How much did you take?”

“Two hundred thousand.”

Marcus's expression changed.

“Where did it go?”

“Medical bills.”

“For Ava?”

“Yes.”

“What treatment?”

Lauren looked at the floor.

“A psychiatric program.”

Ava.

Sixteen.

The girl who had screamed at me yesterday.

The girl who had been frightened of both parents.

I suddenly understood why her behavior had been so unpredictable.

She wasn't simply angry.

She had been carrying adult fear.

“Why didn't you tell Daniel?”

“Because he would have taken her away.”

Daniel said, “I wouldn't.”

“You threatened to.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

I looked at Daniel.

He didn't deny it.

“I was angry,” he said.

Lauren laughed bitterly.

“You told me you would fight me for custody.”

“I said it because I thought you were using Ava to manipulate me.”

“You were right.”

The words landed heavily.

Lauren wiped her face.

“I did.”

I sat on the edge of a box.

The story was becoming uglier, but at least it was becoming coherent.

Lauren had taken money.

Margaret had altered the trust.

Daniel had hidden information.

Ava had been manipulated.

And someone had forged my signature.

But there was still one missing piece.

“Why was an account opened in my name?”

Nobody answered.

Marcus pulled up the account details.

“The account was opened nine months ago.”

“That was before I started investigating.”

“Yes.”

“Who had access to my identification?”

Daniel looked at me.

“I did.”

My stomach dropped.

“Of course.”

He shook his head immediately.

“Not like that.”

“Then explain.”

“Your passport copy was in our safe.”

“I know.”

“My mother had access to the safe.”

“So did you.”

“Yes.”

“You expect me to believe you didn't open it?”

“I didn't.”

“Can you prove it?”

“No.”

The answer hurt.

But I had to admit something.

He wasn't trying to deny the possibility.

He was telling me he couldn't prove his innocence.

For once, that felt more honest.

Marcus said, “There may be a way.”

“How?”

“The account required an identification verification.”

“Can we get it?”

“With a court request.”

Helen called at that moment.

I answered.

“Rachel, I have the filing.”

“What filing?”

“The guardianship petition.”

My pulse quickened.

“Who filed it?”

“Daniel.”

I looked at him.

“He did file it,” Helen continued.

“Why?”

“The petition claims Lauren is financially unstable and has misused trust assets.”

Lauren's face went white.

“She'll lose custody.”

“Possibly.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you know Lauren took money?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you hide it from me?”

“Because I was trying to negotiate with her.”

“And the guardianship?”

“I filed it after I found out Ava was being pressured to lie.”

That made sense.

Almost.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I knew you would get involved.”

“I was your wife.”

“I was trying to keep you safe.”

“You failed.”

He went quiet.

I looked at him through the phone.

“You didn't protect me by keeping secrets.”

“I know.”

That was the first time he sounded broken.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“I should have told you everything.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That you'd leave.”

I almost laughed.

“You told me to leave.”

“I know.”

“And you didn't come after me.”

“I thought you hated me.”

“I was waiting for you to choose me.”

He said nothing.

The silence hurt.

Then he said, “I did choose you.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You chose silence.”

He didn't argue.

That mattered.

I turned toward Lauren.

“What happens to Ava now?”

“She stays with me,” Lauren said.

Daniel answered, “No.”

Lauren glared at the phone.

“You don't get to decide that.”

“Neither do you.”

Marcus stepped between them.

“Both of you need to stop.”

I looked at him.

“What happens legally?”

“Until the petition is heard, nothing is final.”

“Good.”

I stood.

“Then we're not letting anyone move Ava anywhere.”

Lauren stared at me.

“You'd help me?”

“I'd help Ava.”

She nodded.

“I understand.”

Marcus received another notification.

He looked at it.

Then frowned.

“What?”

“The account in Rachel's name was accessed again.”

“When?”

“Six minutes ago.”

I froze.

“From where?”

He showed me the location.

My home.

The house Daniel and I shared.

I looked at him.

“Someone is inside.”

Daniel heard me.

“Don't go there.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

Then another notification appeared.

A file had been uploaded to the account.

The filename was:

FINAL_EVIDENCE_RACHEL.pdf

I stared at it.

“What's that?”

Marcus opened the metadata.

The file had been created less than two minutes earlier.

“Someone wants us to see it.”

I looked at Lauren.

Then Daniel.

Then the storage unit.

“We go back.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because this is bait.”

“Then what do we do?”

He looked at the screen.

“We make them think it worked.”

I understood.

For the first time since the barbecue, I felt something other than fear.

I felt control.

I turned to Daniel.

“I want you to tell whoever is watching that I have the original.”

“Rachel—”

“Tell them.”

He hesitated.

Then he said, “All right.”

I watched the screen.

The file remained open.

And somewhere inside the house I had once believed was safe, someone was waiting for me to return.
