We returned to Unit 214 just after eight the next morning. The sky was low and gray, and rainwater still clung to the pavement in shallow pools beneath the storage facility's fluorescent lights.
Luke carried the folder from the previous night under his jacket. Ben stayed close behind him. Neither boy spoke as we walked toward the unit.
I kept thinking about Claire's warning.
The records had been changed deliberately.
That was different from the mistake.
An accident could be forgiven. A deliberate deception required a reason.
I unlocked the door and raised it slowly. The smell of dust and cardboard drifted out.
"Where do we start?" Ben asked.
I looked around.
"Where we stopped."
The filing cabinet was still against the back wall. We pulled every drawer open, checking beneath old invoices, photographs, and folders. Most of the material had nothing to do with the hospital.
Then Luke noticed a loose panel behind the cabinet.
"Mom."
He crouched and ran his fingers along the wall.
"There."
A narrow wooden compartment had been built into the wall behind the cabinet.
Ben stared at it.
"My father knew about this place."
"Apparently."
Luke found a small brass key taped beneath the cabinet's bottom drawer.
The key fit.
Inside were three envelopes.
The first had my name.
The second had Claire's.
The third simply said:
FOR THE BOYS.
My hands began to shake.
Luke reached for it.
"Let me."
He opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a letter from Daniel.
I recognized his handwriting immediately.
Sarah,
If you're reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.
I had to stop reading.
Luke looked at me.
"Mom."
I handed him the letter.
He read aloud.
"I discovered the identity problem shortly after your discharge from St. Matthew's. I believed it was a clerical mistake until Mercer warned me that correcting the records would trigger an investigation that could put both families in danger."
Ben leaned closer.
"What investigation?"
Luke continued.
"Mercer told me that the children were being protected from a custody action connected to their fathers' business dealings."
I frowned.
"That's what Claire said."
Luke kept reading.
"But I later discovered that this was only part of the story."
My pulse quickened.
"Mercer had access to confidential medical records, financial records, and legal documents. He used information about the families to pressure people into silence."
Ben whispered, "Blackmail."
Luke nodded.
Daniel's letter confirmed it.
Mercer had learned about financial problems within Ben's family. He had also discovered that Daniel knew about irregularities connected to the business.
Then he threatened to expose everything.
I looked at Ben.
"Your father knew."
Ben nodded slowly.
"He must have."
Luke continued reading.
"I was told that if I challenged the records, Sarah would be dragged into the investigation and the children would become part of the dispute. I believed keeping quiet was the lesser danger."
I closed my eyes.
That was the explanation Daniel had never been able to give me.
It didn't excuse him.
But it explained his fear.
Luke turned the page.
Then he stopped.
"What?"
"There are names."
He placed the letter on the box between us.
Several people were listed.
A hospital administrator.
A lawyer.
Ben's father.
Dr. Mercer.
And another name.
My own.
I stared at it.
"Why is my name there?"
Luke read the line beneath it.
"Sarah Miller was never informed of the full circumstances surrounding the delivery."
Ben looked at me.
"Your father was protecting you."
I swallowed.
"Or he was protecting himself."
Neither boy argued.
The second envelope contained Claire's letter.
She had written that after Ben's father died, she discovered documents proving the hospital had intentionally maintained two conflicting sets of records.
One set showed Luke as my son.
Another showed him as Claire's.
The same was true for Ben.
But there was something else.
A notation appeared on one page:
PATERNITY STATUS REQUIRES VERIFICATION.
Ben's face changed.
"What does that mean?"
I looked at the page.
"It means somebody wasn't sure who the fathers were."
Ben stepped back.
"My father was my father."
"Maybe legally."
He stared at me.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I don't know."
Luke picked up another sheet.
"This is dated two months after we were born."
At the bottom was Mercer's signature.
There was a handwritten instruction:
DNA testing postponed.
I felt sick.
"Why postpone it?"
Ben looked at me.
"Because if they knew who the biological parents were, they couldn't keep the story straight."
Luke's expression hardened.
"So the identity wasn't the only thing being hidden."
I didn't answer.
A sound came from outside.
A car door slammed.
We froze.
Ben moved toward the entrance.
"Someone's here."
I grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
We listened.
Footsteps approached.
Then stopped.
A man's voice called from the corridor.
"Sarah?"
Luke looked at me.
I knew that voice.
It was unfamiliar.
But the way the man said my name made my skin prickle.
"Who are you?"
"I'm here to collect something Daniel left behind."
Ben whispered, "Don't open the door."
The man laughed quietly.
"You already found it."
Silence.
Then the footsteps moved away.
Luke looked at me.
"We need to leave."
I nodded.
We gathered the papers quickly.
But when we reached the car, Ben stopped.
"My mother's car."
A dark sedan sat at the end of the parking lot.
Claire was inside.
She rolled down the window.
"Get in."
I approached her.
"What happened?"
"Mercer knows."
My stomach dropped.
"How?"
"He called me."
Ben opened the passenger door.
"What did he want?"
Claire looked at him.
"Your father kept one final record."
"What record?"
Claire's eyes moved to the folder in my hands.
"The original birth ledger."
I stared at her.
"Where is it?"
She shook her head.
"That's what Mercer wants."
Ben frowned.
"Why?"
Claire looked at me.
"Because the ledger proves which baby was placed in which bassinet."
Luke went still.
"So it proves who was switched."
"Yes."
I looked at the storage unit.
The truth had been sitting behind a wooden panel for eighteen years.
And now someone was willing to chase us for it.
Claire started the engine.
"Get in."
I hesitated.
"Where are we going?"
She looked at the boys.
"Somewhere Mercer won't think to look."
