PART 4: Court
Silvia told me not to access the camera account ourselves.
“We disclose the camera system to the judge and request a preservation order.”
The next morning, Grant arrived at family court in a sharp gray suit with his lawyer. Marissa sat beside him, avoiding my eyes.
Lena waited privately with a court-appointed advocate.
Grant’s attorney painted the story exactly as expected: an overprotective mother, a difficult teenager, and a father enforcing discipline.
I stayed silent.
Silvia presented the ER records, the paramedic’s statement, the counselor’s notes, and our timeline.
Then Mark testified.
He confirmed he had been called to Grant’s address before and had documented concerns because Lena seemed fearful and the adults’ explanation did not match what he observed.
Next came Marissa’s behavioral log.
Silvia held up the entry claiming Lena voluntarily stayed outdoors. Then she showed Grant’s text admitting they had barred her from the house.
“Mrs. Miller,” Silvia asked, “which statement is true?”
Marissa looked at Grant.
“I don’t remember the exact wording.”
Then Silvia requested a subpoena for the home security cloud storage.
Grant leaned toward Marissa and whispered sharply.
Marissa blurted out, “You told me you deleted those files!”
The courtroom went silent.
Grant snapped, “Shut up!”
The judge struck the gavel.
No argument was needed.
They had exposed themselves.
Then Silvia showed the grocery receipt from 7:02 p.m.
Piece by piece, their story collapsed.
The judge granted me immediate temporary sole custody, suspended Grant’s unsupervised visits, and ordered a full CPS investigation.
As we left, Grant caught up to me.
“Are you happy now?”
“No,” I said. “I want our daughter to walk into a house without wondering what punishment is waiting behind the door.”
“You’re turning her against me.”
“No,” I said softly. “I’m finally listening to her.”

One Comment on “When I arrived at my ex-husband’s house to pick up our fifteen-year-old daughter, I found her unconscious by the front door in the pouring rain. He barely reacted. “She’s just being punished,” he said. I didn’t waste time arguing. I called emergency services, then picked up her soaked backpack. At the hospital, I found a note hidden inside. And that was when I realized this hadn’t been the first night.”
