PART 7 – The Car Outside Maya’s House Carried No Familiar Face, but Its Driver Left Behind a Warning Meant Only for Her

The car stayed for eleven minutes.

Maya counted.

She did not approach the window again.

Instead, she turned off the kitchen light and moved Leo away from the front room.

“Go upstairs.”

“Why?”

“Because I need you to.”

Something in her voice made him obey.

Maya waited until she heard his bedroom door close.

Then she called Elena.

“There is a car outside my house.”

“What kind?”

“Dark sedan. No visible plate from here.”

“Are you inside?”

“Yes.”

“Stay there.”

Maya watched the vehicle.

A door opened.

A man stepped out.

He did not approach the house.

He walked to the mailbox, placed something inside, and returned to the car.

Then he drove away.

Maya waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Only then did she step outside.

The street was empty.

She opened the mailbox.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel.

Not the military photograph from Elena's office.

This one showed him standing beside his aircraft on the morning of his final flight.

Maya turned it over.

Three words were written on the back.

YOU WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW.

Her hands went cold.

Elena arrived less than fifteen minutes later.

She photographed the note before touching it.

“This is intimidation.”

“Or a warning.”

“Either way, it's evidence.”

Maya looked toward the road.

“They know the investigation is continuing.”

Elena nodded.

“And they know you're involved.”

Maya stared at Daniel's photograph.

“I've been involved since the day he died.”

Elena placed the evidence bag on the table.

“We're increasing protection around you and Leo.”

Maya shook her head.

“I don't want strangers following my son.”

“You don't get to choose whether someone dangerous notices you.”

“I know.”

She looked directly at Elena.

“But I do get to choose whether fear controls what I do.”

Elena said nothing.

The next morning, Maya returned to the federal building.

Elena had found another document.

It was a handwritten note from Daniel's personal locker.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

I know the aircraft is being altered.

Maya read the sentence twice.

Then she continued.

If something happens, check the maintenance records from the week before the flight.

She lowered the page.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't anyone find this?”

“Because the locker was never properly cataloged.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Seven years.

Seven years of believing she had missed something.

And Daniel had left her a trail.

Elena continued.

“There is one more line.”

Maya looked.

Daniel had written a name.

Not Robert Anderson.

Not the missing contractor.

A different name.

Michael Davis.

Maya stared.

The captain who had flown Flight 412.

The man who had helped save hundreds of lives.

The man who had told her Daniel's accident was not pilot error.

Maya felt suddenly cold.

“No.”

Elena nodded.

“That was my reaction.”

“You think Michael was involved?”

“I think we need to ask him what he knew.”

Maya remembered the cockpit.

Michael's hesitation.

The way he had known her husband's name.

The information he had withheld.

The things he had said only after the aircraft was safely on the ground.

Maya looked at the photograph of Daniel.

“Call him.”

Elena reached for her phone.

Before she could dial, it rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Maya watched her.

Elena listened silently.

Then she looked up.

“Michael Davis is missing.”

The room seemed to stop.

“When?”

Elena ended the call.

“Last night.”

Maya looked down at Daniel's handwritten note.

The name she had trusted was now attached to another disappearance.

And for the first time, she wondered whether the captain had saved Flight 412 because he wanted to protect its passengers—or because he needed Maya alive for something he had not yet revealed.
