By evening, Elena had moved the evidence to three separate locations.
The original laptop went into a secure evidence vault controlled by an independent judicial unit. One encrypted copy was given to a federal judge through a channel Reed could not access. The third remained with Maya.
Michael was placed under protection.
Aaron was moved again.
Pierce was transferred to a military facility outside the normal federal detention system.
Nobody used the same vehicle twice.
Nobody repeated a route.
Nobody made unnecessary phone calls.
Maya spent the night in a small secure apartment with Leo.
He slept in the next room.
She remained awake.
Daniel's letter lay on the table.
Maya read it again.
She had read it so many times that she knew every line.
But this time one sentence looked different.
Trust what you saw with your own eyes.
She thought about the flight.
She had seen the hydraulic panel.
She had seen the damaged component.
She had seen Robert.
She had felt the aircraft respond to control inputs.
She had known what was happening because her training had never really left her.
The network had counted on her doubting herself.
Daniel had known that.
At 2:13 in the morning, Elena knocked on the door.
Maya opened it.
"What's wrong?"
"We found Reed."
"Where?"
"At headquarters."
Maya stared.
"You found him?"
"He hasn't left."
"Why?"
"Because he thinks we're coming back."
Maya stepped into the hallway.
"What happened to the evidence?"
"Safe."
"Pierce?"
"Safe."
"Michael?"
"Safe."
Elena hesitated.
"There's one more thing."
She handed Maya a printed document.
It was a resignation letter.
Thomas Reed had submitted it electronically at 1:42 a.m.
Maya read it.
"He knows."
"Yes."
"He's running."
"Not yet."
Elena looked down the corridor.
"Because he doesn't know what we have."
Maya understood.
"You're going to let him think the evidence is incomplete."
"Exactly."
They returned to the operations room.
A team had been monitoring Reed's movements. He had entered his office shortly before midnight and had remained there.
Then his computer activity changed.
Files were being deleted.
Elena watched the screen.
"He's cleaning up."
Maya stood behind her.
"Can you stop him?"
"Not without revealing ourselves."
The deletion continued.
Emails disappeared.
Financial records.
Travel information.
Personnel files.
Then a folder appeared.
Its name was Daniel Brooks.
Maya's breath caught.
"Open it."
Elena shook her head.
"Wait."
Another file appeared.
It contained a video.
Reed's face filled the screen.
He was speaking directly to someone.
"I told you the woman was not a problem."
A second voice answered.
"We underestimated her."
Maya leaned closer.
The voice was distorted.
Reed continued.
"Pierce is finished."
"Then replace him."
"With whom?"
The voice answered.
"Someone already inside."
The video ended.
Maya looked at Elena.
"Someone else."
"Yes."
The implication was worse than anything they had learned.
Reed was not the highest level.
There was another person giving orders.
A person who could replace Pierce.
A person who had access to the federal system.
Maya looked at Daniel's records.
"How far does this go?"
Elena answered honestly.
"We don't know."
A message appeared on the monitoring screen.
Reed was leaving his office.
Elena immediately stood.
"Now."
They followed him through a separate secured corridor.
Reed walked quickly.
He carried no briefcase.
No visible documents.
He entered an elevator.
Elena's team blocked the lower exits.
Maya watched from a nearby hallway.
The elevator doors opened.
Reed stepped out.
He froze when he saw Elena.
"Agent Brooks."
"Deputy Director."
"You've made a serious mistake."
Elena held up the evidence authorization.
"No. You did."
Reed's face hardened.
"You don't know what you're doing."
"We know about Daniel."
Reed's eyes shifted toward Maya.
Then he understood.
"You."
Maya stepped forward.
"You knew my name before I boarded Flight 412."
Reed said nothing.
"You knew my son was on that plane."
Still nothing.
"You knew Daniel was innocent."
Reed's jaw tightened.
Maya moved closer.
"And you watched me spend seven years believing my husband caused his own death."
Reed finally spoke.
"It was necessary."
Maya's face went cold.
"Necessary for what?"
"To protect the institution."
"From what?"
"From collapse."
Maya stared at him.
"You destroyed people to protect paperwork."
Reed shook his head.
"You don't understand the consequences."
"I understand exactly what you did."
Elena arrested him.
As they placed handcuffs on his wrists, Reed looked at Maya.
"You think this ends with me."
Maya said nothing.
He smiled faintly.
"It doesn't."
He was led away.
For the first time since the flight, Maya felt the tension in her shoulders begin to loosen.
Then Elena's phone rang.
She answered.
The caller was the judge handling the evidence.
Elena's expression changed.
"What?"
Maya watched her.
"Say that again."
Elena listened.
Then ended the call.
"What happened?"
"The judge's security detail has been compromised."
Maya felt the tension return.
"Is the evidence safe?"
"Yes."
"What about the judge?"
Elena looked at her.
"Missing."
Maya's stomach dropped.
"How?"
"His own security team took him."
The investigation had become larger than one corrupt official.
Someone had resources.
Someone had people everywhere.
But now there was something the network hadn't anticipated.
They had witnesses.
They had documents.
They had recordings.
And they had Maya.
Elena looked at her.
"We need to make this public."
Maya shook her head.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because if we release everything now, they'll disappear."
Elena understood.
"We force them to move first."
Maya looked at Daniel's photograph.
"Then we find the person giving the orders."
