PART 19 – The Last Piece of Evidence

The breakthrough came from a place nobody expected.

Michael found it.

He had been reviewing Daniel's old flight notebook when he noticed that one page had been cut from the binding rather than torn out.

Maya examined the remaining edge.

"Someone removed it carefully."

Michael nodded.

"Daniel did."

"Why?"

"Because he didn't want anyone to find it."

They placed the notebook under a bright inspection lamp.

The binding contained a thin strip of paper.

Maya carefully removed it.

There was a handwritten sentence.

"Ask who approved the emergency maintenance exception."

Elena looked at the date.

The emergency exception had been issued on the morning of Daniel's final flight.

It had allowed maintenance personnel to install a component that normally required additional inspection.

Maya stared at the signature.

She knew it.

Captain Michael Davis.

Michael's face went pale.

"I didn't sign that."

Elena studied the document.

"Your signature is here."

"It's forged."

Maya believed him.

"Why would they use your signature?"

"Because Daniel trusted me."

Elena looked at the paperwork.

"They wanted the record to show that someone Daniel trusted had approved the component."

Michael lowered his head.

"And if Daniel had reported the problem afterward, it would look like I had made the decision."

Maya understood.

"They were building another pilot-error trail."

Michael nodded.

"Exactly."

Elena sent the signature for forensic analysis.

The result came back quickly.

It was forged.

But the important discovery was the person who had uploaded the forged authorization.

The access log led to a secure federal terminal.

Not Reed's office.

Not Whitmore's.

Another office.

The terminal belonged to Deputy Inspector Laura Bennett.

Maya didn't recognize the name.

Elena did.

"Bennett was assigned to internal oversight."

"Was she involved in Daniel's investigation?"

"Yes."

Maya felt the pieces align.

"She was the person who could erase the records."

Elena nodded.

"And approve replacements."

Michael looked at the screen.

"She's the one who helped Reed."

They found Bennett's office empty.

Her access card had been used an hour earlier.

Her desk contained no personal items.

But Maya noticed a framed photograph.

It showed Bennett standing beside Thomas Reed and Colonel Whitmore.

Three people.

One investigation.

One lie.

Elena found a hidden compartment beneath the desk.

Inside was a small recording device.

They played it.

Bennett's voice came through.

"Reed wants the woman removed from the flight."

Another voice answered.

"She isn't a threat."

Bennett replied.

"She's Daniel Brooks's wife. If she ever sees the maintenance records, she will understand them."

The second voice said, "Then make sure she doesn't."

The recording ended.

Maya felt sick.

The decision to place her on Flight 412 had been deliberate.

But there was another recording.

Bennett spoke again.

"The child?"

A pause.

"Use him only if necessary."

Maya closed her eyes.

Leo.

They had discussed her son as though he were a piece on a board.

Elena immediately left the room.

Within minutes, protective agents confirmed Leo was safe.

Maya sat down.

Michael stood beside her.

"They're afraid of you."

Maya looked up.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel trusted you with the truth."

She thought about the first time she had seen the defective component.

The way it had looked wrong.

The way her instincts had recognized the problem.

Daniel had trusted those instincts.

So had the captain.

And now she realized something else.

Flight 412 had not simply been an attempt to recreate Daniel's crash.

It had been a test.

They wanted to know whether Maya still had the skills to recognize the sabotage.

If she failed, they could blame her.

If she succeeded, they would know she was dangerous.

Either way, they had planned to control the narrative.

But they hadn't planned for Maya to survive, identify the sabotage, expose Robert, recover Daniel's evidence, and connect the network to Reed.

Elena returned.

"Bennett has been found."

"Where?"

"At a private terminal."

Maya stood.

"She's leaving?"

"Trying to."

They reached the terminal just as Bennett was boarding a small aircraft.

Elena ordered her to stop.

Bennett turned.

For a moment, Maya saw fear on her face.

Then Bennett smiled.

"You don't understand."

Elena approached.

"We understand enough."

Bennett looked at Maya.

"You think Daniel was the first?"

Maya froze.

"What?"

Bennett continued.

"Your husband wasn't the first pilot they silenced."

Elena stopped.

"How many?"

Bennett looked toward the aircraft.

"Too many."

Maya stepped closer.

"Why?"

Bennett's expression changed.

"Because the system became bigger than the people inside it."

Maya shook her head.

"People chose to participate."

Bennett lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

"Then they can choose to stop."

Bennett looked at her.

"Some already have."

She handed Elena a small key.

"There is one final archive."

"Where?"

Bennett gave the location.

Maya recognized it.

It was an old military records facility scheduled for demolition.

Daniel had visited it several times.

Bennett whispered, "The original files were never destroyed."

Elena took the key.

"Who has access?"

Bennett looked at Maya.

"Only the person Daniel designated."

Maya understood.

"Me."

Bennett nodded.

Before Elena could ask another question, Bennett said something else.

"Reed wasn't the person who gave the first order."

Maya felt the familiar chill return.

"Who was?"

Bennett shook her head.

"I never saw his face."

"Then how do you know?"

"Because every order came through the same private number."

Elena asked, "Do you have the number?"

Bennett nodded.

"It's in the archive."

Maya looked at the key.

The last piece was waiting for them.

And this time, Daniel had made sure only she could retrieve it.
