PART 21 – The Truth About My Father’s Claims Finally Began to Take Shape, and I Learned Why Lucas Had Been So Careful With Every Signature

I spent the next morning at the kitchen table with my notebook open.

I had written down every question I wanted to ask Samantha.

Some were about the house.

Some were about the trust.

The rest concerned the company Lucas had spent years building.

I didn't expect to understand everything in one conversation.

I simply wanted to stop feeling as though everyone else knew what was happening to my life before I did.

When Samantha called, I read the first question aloud.

“Have you found out whether my father submitted anything in my name?”

“We're reviewing the available records and the communications he made. I don't want to tell you a document was forged until that has been established.”

I drew a line beneath the question.

“What do you know for certain?”

“Your father claimed that you had authorized him to act on your behalf. You have told me you never gave him that authorization. The documents and records will help establish exactly what he attempted.”

I appreciated her answer.

It didn't give me the certainty I wanted, but it gave me something better than a guess.

It gave me a process.

I asked about the house next.

Samantha confirmed that the records she had reviewed supported my ownership interest.

My father had no automatic authority to sell the property.

He couldn't make himself the owner by announcing that he intended to take over.

I looked toward the front door.

I could still picture him walking through it with Courtney behind him.

He had not hesitated.

He had not asked whether I wanted him there.

He had simply entered and begun issuing orders.

For the first time, I understood that his confidence had depended partly on my silence.

He had expected me to be too frightened or too exhausted to challenge him.

He had been wrong about that.

“What about the trust?” I asked.

“Lucas established protections for the assets intended for your benefit. We're reviewing the relevant provisions to determine how they apply to your father's claims.”

“And the company?”

“The ownership records and governance arrangements remain important. Your father cannot acquire control simply by claiming that you authorized him.”

I let the words settle.

I didn't know the full value of Lucas's shares.

I didn't know every detail of the business.

But I knew that Lucas had worked hard to build something that could provide for our family.

I wasn't going to let someone take it without proper authority.

Samantha explained that the next step was to finish reviewing the relevant records and determine whether any formal action was necessary.

I asked whether my father could still contact the bank or the company.

“He can make inquiries, but that doesn't mean his requests will be accepted. The relevant institutions must follow their procedures.”

That answer reminded me of the phone call on the morning of the assault.

Charles had been standing in Lucas's office when his phone rang.

He had looked confident at first.

Then he had asked the caller whether something was impossible.

I still didn't know what he had heard.

But I no longer needed to imagine that the call had magically resolved everything.

The important thing was that the records existed, and the people responsible for them were checking his claims.

After we finished discussing the legal questions, Samantha asked how I was doing.

I looked at my notebook.

“I'm managing.”

“That's good. You don't have to handle every detail at once.”

I smiled faintly.

Lucas used to tell me the same thing when I became overwhelmed.

I would make a list of everything I needed to do, then stare at it until the list itself became another problem.

He would take the pen from my hand and ask which thing needed to happen first.

Usually, the answer was much simpler than I expected.

I decided to use that approach now.

The first priority was my health and the baby.

The second was making sure the legal records were reviewed properly.

Everything else could wait.

When the call ended, I closed my notebook.

I didn't feel victorious.

I felt steadier.

There was a difference.

Victory would mean the problem was finished.

Steadiness meant I could face the next step without allowing fear to make every decision for me.

I looked at the front door again.

My father had used the key he still possessed because I had trusted him enough to leave it with him.

I would not make that same mistake again.

I would handle access to the property carefully.

I would keep records of unwanted contact.

And I would let Samantha deal with the estate questions.

For the first time, the future felt like something I could participate in rather than something other people would decide for me.
