PART 15 – Elena Told Me Why She Gave Me Up, and Her Answer Made Me Question Everything I Believed About My Childhood

We reached the church just after sunrise.

It had been abandoned for years.

The stained-glass windows were cracked.

Weeds had grown through the stone steps.

The doors were open.

Deputies entered first.

Dad stayed beside me.

Caroline followed.

We found Valerie sitting in the front pew.

Elena sat several rows behind her.

Neither woman moved.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Elena stood.

She looked at me.

And I knew immediately.

She had my eyes.

Not because of the genetic test.

Not because anyone had told me.

Because when she looked at me, something in my body recognized her before my mind did.

She covered her mouth.

“Maya.”

I couldn't answer.

Valerie looked exhausted.

Her clothes were wrinkled.

Her hair was loose.

She didn't look like the woman who had always controlled every room.

She looked frightened.

Elena took one step toward me.

Dad moved closer.

She stopped.

“I won't come any nearer.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because you get to decide.”

That sentence broke something inside me.

Valerie looked away.

Caroline sat down.

Deputy Collins remained near the door.

Elena wiped her eyes.

“I have wanted to say your name out loud for twenty-eight years.”

I swallowed.

“Then why didn't you?”

She looked at Valerie.

“Because I was told you were safer without me.”

“By who?”

“Martin first.”

I looked at Martin's name in my mind.

“Then by Richard.”

“And Valerie?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Valerie told me she would protect you.”

I looked at Mom.

“Did you?”

Valerie began crying.

“I tried.”

“You kept me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She didn't answer.

Elena did.

“Because she loved you.”

I turned toward her.

“That's not enough.”

“No.”

“Love doesn't explain the money.”

“No.”

“Or the lies.”

“No.”

“Or Hawaii.”

Elena lowered her head.

“You're right.”

I stared at both women.

“Then tell me everything.”

Elena nodded.

“I was twenty-two.”

She sat down.

“Your father and I were young. We were in love. We believed we could build a life together.”

“What happened?”

“Richard found out I was pregnant.”

“And he hated it?”

“He hated losing control.”

Elena explained that Richard had been using family money to cover private debts.

The trust Grandma created threatened that control because it placed money beyond Richard's reach.

When he learned Elena was carrying Thomas's child, he saw an opportunity.

A child connected to two families.

A trust.

A future inheritance.

A bargaining piece.

“I refused to let him control you.”

“So you ran.”

“Yes.”

“To Valerie?”

“Through Martin.”

I looked at Mom.

“She was a friend.”

Valerie nodded.

“I knew Elena was afraid.”

“Then why did you take me?”

“Because she asked me to.”

That answer stunned me.

“You asked her?”

Elena nodded.

“I needed somewhere you could be hidden.”

“How long?”

“Six months.”

I looked at Valerie.

“You were supposed to raise me for six months.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Valerie began crying.

“I couldn't give you back.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I came for her.”

“When?”

“Six months later.”

I looked at Elena.

“What happened?”

“Valerie refused.”

“And Martin?”

“He told me taking you to court would expose the arrangement.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard had people watching.”

“Then why didn't you fight?”

Elena's face broke.

“Because I believed if I fought, they would find you.”

The answer was almost impossible to hear.

“So you disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“And you never came back.”

“I tried.”

“How?”

“Letters.”

“To who?”

“Martin.”

“Did he give them to Valerie?”

Elena looked at her sister.

“No.”

Caroline answered.

“He intercepted them.”

I turned toward Martin's role again.

“Why?”

Caroline whispered, “Because Richard paid him.”

Valerie shook her head.

“Not at first.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Martin believed he was protecting Maya.”

“Then what changed?”

“Richard died.”

Valerie's voice cracked.

“And after that, there was nobody left to stop me.”

I stared at her.

“You could have returned me.”

“Yes.”

“You didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Valerie looked at me.

“Because by then, you were my daughter too.”

I shook my head.

“No. You don't get to use love to erase what you did.”

She nodded slowly.

“I know.”

Elena stood.

“I don't want you to hate her for choosing you.”

I looked at her.

“I don't.”

“You hate what she did.”

“Yes.”

“That is different.”

I didn't know whether I agreed.

Maybe both things could exist.

Love and harm.

Protection and possession.

A mother and a liar.

The world had become less simple.

Deputy Collins interrupted.

“We need to discuss Daniel.”

Elena's face changed.

“What happened?”

“He's looking for Maya.”

She went pale.

“Then you need to move her.”

Dad stepped forward.

“Where?”

“Somewhere Daniel can't find.”

Elena shook her head.

“He will.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I know my brother.”

She looked at me.

“He doesn't believe you're a person.”

The words made me freeze.

“What does he believe I am?”

“A key.”

“To the trust?”

“To the trust, the property, and the documents Richard left behind.”

Caroline spoke.

“Daniel believes Richard hid something in the original family records.”

“What?”

“We don't know.”

“Then why does he need me?”

“Because the final document was written to be opened only by the beneficiary.”

I stared at her.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

Deputy Collins asked, “Where is the document?”

Caroline looked at Valerie.

Valerie whispered, “Martin has it.”

Everyone became silent.

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You came here with Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Where is Martin?”

Valerie shook her head.

“He left before we did.”

Dad stepped forward.

“Then why did you stay?”

Valerie looked at me.

“Because Elena wanted to see you.”

I couldn't speak.

Elena took a breath.

“I wanted to apologize.”

“For what?”

“For leaving.”

“You were afraid.”

“I was still your mother.”

That sentence stayed with me.

She had lost me.

But she didn't pretend she hadn't.

Then Elena reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small photograph.

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

It showed a young woman sitting in a hospital bed.

She was pregnant.

Her hand rested over her stomach.

Beside her sat a young man.

Thomas.

My father.

I had never seen them together.

On the back, in faded handwriting, were four words.

For our daughter, Maya.

My eyes filled with tears.

I turned the photograph over again.

“Why didn't Dad have this?”

“Richard took the originals.”

“Then how did you get it?”

Elena looked toward Valerie.

“Because Valerie gave it to me.”

I stared at Mom.

“Why?”

She didn't answer.

Elena did.

“Because after all these years, she finally understood that keeping every piece of your history from you was another way of keeping you from yourself.”

Valerie wiped her face.

“I found it in the black case.”

“You didn't tell us.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That if I gave it to you, you'd never forgive me.”

I looked at her.

“You were right about one thing.”

She waited.

“I needed to know.”

Her shoulders dropped.

“I know.”

Then Deputy Collins' radio sounded.

He listened.

His expression hardened.

“What?”

He looked at Dad.

“Daniel has been found.”

“Where?”

“At the storage facility.”

Caroline stood.

“The old one?”

“Yes.”

“What is he doing?”

Collins looked at me.

“He's opened the vault.”

“What vault?”

“The one Caroline said had been empty.”

Caroline's face went white.

“It wasn't empty.”

“What was inside?”

She whispered the answer.

“The original adoption file.”

The room went silent.

Deputy Collins received another message.

Then his eyes narrowed.

“And Daniel has someone with him.”

“Who?”

He looked at Valerie.

“Martin.”

Valerie closed her eyes.

Then she whispered something that none of us expected.

“Then Daniel finally found what Richard wanted him to find.”
