PART 6 – The Nurse Who Remembered Luke’s Questions Had Kept One Small Detail Hidden, and Hannah Was Finally Ready to Hear It

Elena lived less than an hour from us.

Victor gave us her number the following morning.

Hannah called first.

The woman who answered was silent when Hannah introduced herself.

Then she said, “I wondered when you would come.”

That sentence frightened me.

“What does that mean?” Hannah asked.

Elena sighed.

“It means Luke asked me to wait.”

“For what?”

“For you to become old enough to understand.”

Hannah looked at me.

“Can we meet?”

“Yes.”

We arranged to meet at a small café near the hospital.

Elena arrived early.

She was in her sixties now, with short silver hair and the careful movements of someone accustomed to long days on her feet.

When she saw Hannah, she stopped.

“You look like him.”

Hannah swallowed.

“People say that.”

“They're right.”

We sat.

Elena placed a folder on the table.

Hannah stared at it.

“What is that?”

“Notes I kept for myself.”

“About Luke?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena looked at me.

“Because your son asked questions no eighteen-year-old should have needed to ask.”

Hannah opened the folder.

Inside were photocopies of handwritten notes.

Dates.

Names.

Medication changes.

A list of questions.

At the bottom of one page, Luke had written:

“If something happens to me, make sure Hannah knows I chose this.”

Hannah stopped breathing for a moment.

She looked at Elena.

“Why would he write that?”

“Because he was afraid your mother might believe he had been pressured.”

I felt tears sting my eyes.

“I never pressured him.”

“I know,” Elena said.

“But he knew you might blame yourself.”

“Yes.”

Hannah touched the page.

“Did he ever regret it?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“He had difficult moments. He asked about risks. He worried about complications. He wanted to understand everything.”

“But he didn't regret it?”

“No.”

Elena leaned forward.

“He asked me something during his last evening.”

“What?”

“Whether saving someone meant anything if you couldn't stay to see them grow up.”

Hannah's face crumpled.

“What did you say?”

“I told him that wasn't for him to decide.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“He didn't like that answer.”

“What did he say?”

“He said, ‘Then I'll make sure she grows up enough to decide for herself.’”

Hannah covered her mouth.

I reached for her hand.

Elena continued.

“He was very protective of you.”

“I barely remember him.”

“That didn't matter to him.”

Hannah looked confused.

“What do you mean?”

“He said you didn't need to remember every day. He only wanted you to have the chance to live enough days to make your own memories.”

The words settled heavily between us.

Elena opened another folder.

“This is something else.”

Inside was a copy of a consent form.

Luke's signature was at the bottom.

Hannah stared at it.

“That's his handwriting.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you showing me this?”

“Because you asked whether he chose.”

She nodded.

“He did.”

Hannah's eyes moved across the page.

Then she noticed a handwritten note in the margin.

“What's that?”

Elena looked down.

“That was something Luke added himself.”

Hannah read it.

“I know what I'm doing.”

She frowned.

“That's all?”

“No.”

Elena turned the page.

At the bottom, Luke had written:

“Don't make my sister feel guilty for living.”

Hannah started crying.

I did too.

Elena reached across the table.

“He was thinking about you until the end.”

Hannah wiped her face.

“I wish I could talk to him.”

“I know.”

“Did he know I loved him?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because he told me.”

Hannah looked at her.

“What exactly did he say?”

“He said, ‘She doesn't have to say it. I know.’”

Hannah leaned back.

For several minutes, she said nothing.

Then she asked the question that had been waiting underneath everything.

“Why didn't Mom know any of this?”

Elena looked at me.

“Because Luke asked us not to burden you with details while you were recovering.”

I frowned.

“You knew I was blaming myself.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Luke believed you would hear every fact as another reason to suffer.”

I lowered my head.

He had known me too well.

Hannah closed the folder.

“Is there anything else?”

Elena hesitated.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Luke asked me to give you something if you ever came.”

She reached into her bag.

A small cassette recorder appeared.

Hannah stared at it.

“What is that?”

“A voice recording.”

My heart stopped.

“Of Luke?”

Elena nodded.

“He asked me to keep it.”

“Why didn't you give it to me before?”

“Because he asked me to wait until Hannah was eighteen.”

Hannah looked at me.

“Can we hear it?”

Elena nodded.

She placed the recorder on the table.

The machine clicked.

Static filled the café.

Then a young voice came through.

Luke.

My entire body went still.

“Hey, Hannah.”

Hannah covered her mouth.

Luke's voice continued.

“If you're hearing this, you're eighteen.”

He laughed softly.

“That sounds old to me.”

Hannah smiled through tears.

“I don't know what your life looks like now. I don't know whether you remember me much. I hope you do, but if you don't, that's okay.”

I closed my eyes.

Luke continued.

“I need you to know something.”

A pause.

“I didn't save you because I wanted you to owe me anything.”

Hannah's shoulders shook.

“I did it because you were my little sister.”

Another pause.

“And because I wanted you to have a life that wasn't decided by what happened to me.”

The recording crackled.

“You might hear people call me brave. Don't believe all of that.”

Hannah laughed through her tears.

“I was scared.”

She looked at me.

The recording continued.

“I was really scared.”

I couldn't hold back my tears.

“But I was more afraid of you not getting your chance.”

Hannah pressed both hands against her face.

Luke's voice softened.

“If Mom is there, tell her she didn't fail me.”

I broke.

I had waited thirteen years to hear those words.

The recording continued.

“She'll probably say she did. She'll probably argue. That's Mom.”

Hannah laughed.

Then Luke said the final words.

“And if Dad ever comes back, don't let him tell you what you should feel.”

The recorder clicked.

Silence.

Hannah stared at it.

Elena quietly switched it off.

I couldn't speak.

Hannah reached across the table and took my hand.

“He knew you.”

I nodded.

“He really knew you.”

“Yes.”

She squeezed my fingers.

Then she looked at Elena.

“Did Luke leave anything else?”

Elena's expression changed.

“There is one final thing.”

“What?”

“He asked me to tell you that the compass isn't about finding him.”

Hannah looked down.

“Then what is it about?”

“Finding your own direction.”

Hannah turned the compass in her palm.

The needle moved.

North.

She smiled.

For the first time since the envelope arrived, the smile looked completely like hers.

That evening, Hannah called Victor.

She told him about the recording.

He cried.

Then she said something I never expected.

“I want to meet you again.”

Victor was silent.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

She laughed softly.

“But I want to.”

“What do you want to talk about?”

“Luke.”

“Of course.”

“And after that…”

She paused.

“I want to know who you are.”

Victor didn't answer for several seconds.

“I'd like that.”

The next morning, Hannah put Luke's compass around her neck.

She had made the decision without asking me.

I watched her leave for work.

For thirteen years, I had been terrified of the day she would turn eighteen because I thought it would make Luke's absence larger.

Instead, it had given his voice back to us.

But there was still one unanswered question.

Why had Luke asked Victor to photograph Hannah at eighteen?

The answer came two days later.

And it changed what I thought his final gift had really been.
