PART 6 – Daniel Returned With Answers I Had Spent Years Chasing, Yet His First Confession Made Me Question Everything I Thought I Knew About 2008

We did not let Daniel inside immediately.

Jake stood beside me while Lily remained several steps behind us.

Daniel waited patiently.

“I know this looks terrible,” he said through the door.

“That stopped being enough eighteen years ago,” I answered.

He lowered his head.

“You're right.”

“Why are you here?”

“To warn you.”

“About what?”

“The people watching Lily.”

I looked at Jake.

Daniel continued.

“They aren't after the trust alone.”

“What else?”

“You.”

My hand tightened around the door handle.

“Why?”

“Because you were the one person who could challenge the original documents.”

I opened the door.

Jake immediately said, “Mom.”

“I need answers.”

Daniel entered slowly.

His eyes landed on Lily.

He stopped.

She stared back at him without recognition.

“You're Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Are you my father?”

He swallowed.

“No.”

Lily's expression did not change.

“I thought so.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I never knew the truth until years later.”

“Then tell us.”

He sat down.

“I had an affair with you.”

“I remember.”

“You became pregnant.”

“I remember that too.”

“You told me you were going to leave Michael.”

I shook my head.

“I don't remember saying that.”

“You did.”

“I was frightened.”

“I know.”

He looked toward Lily.

“But the child wasn't mine.”

“Who is?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Michael.”

The room went silent.

Lily stared at him.

Jake slowly turned toward me.

I felt as though the floor had disappeared.

“That's impossible.”

Daniel shook his head.

“The DNA test proved it.”

I couldn't breathe.

“But Michael and I hadn't…”

I stopped.

The timeline.

The hospital.

The pregnancy.

The surgery.

Something in my memory shifted.

Daniel continued.

“You and Michael had been trying to have another child before the affair.”

I remembered.

There had been months of appointments.

Months of disappointment.

Then we stopped trying.

I had forgotten how deeply that period had affected both of us.

“You became pregnant shortly afterward,” Daniel said. “But you assumed I was the father because of the timing.”

I looked at Lily.

She was crying silently.

“Michael knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he act as though the baby wasn't his?”

“Because your father told him to keep it secret.”

I stood.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

“He believed the trust could be challenged if your family circumstances became public.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It did to him.”

Daniel pulled a small envelope from his coat.

Inside was a photocopy of a DNA report.

The result stated that Michael was Lily's biological father.

I stared at the page.

The signature belonged to a laboratory director.

The date was 2008.

“Why wasn't I told?”

“Because you were unconscious.”

Daniel's voice softened.

“Your overdose wasn't accidental.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“You took the pills.”

“Yes.”

“But someone had already put something else into your system.”

My stomach turned.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel leaned forward.

“You were poisoned.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Jake stared at him.

“By whom?”

“We never proved it.”

I shook my head.

“Michael said I tried to kill myself.”

“You did take the pills,” Daniel said. “But the toxicology report showed another substance.”

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because Dr. Harris altered the report.”

I remembered Dr. Evans saying pages were missing.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Because someone wanted you incapacitated long enough for the trust documents to be changed.”

My head throbbed.

“Changed how?”

“Your father had planned to transfer control of the trust to you when you turned twenty-one.”

I frowned.

“I was twenty-six in 2008.”

“Yes.”

“So why would they need me unconscious?”

“Because you were already challenging your father's business arrangements.”

I remembered the arguments.

My father had been furious when I questioned certain accounts.

I had dismissed it as a family disagreement.

Daniel continued.

“He was preparing to expose someone.”

“Who?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Your father's attorney.”

I remembered the name from the list.

“Thomas Reed?”

Daniel nodded.

“Reed had access to the trust.”

“Did he steal from it?”

“Not directly.”

“Then what?”

“He created shell companies.”

Jake looked confused.

“Why?”

“To move assets.”

I stared at Daniel.

“How much?”

“Enough to make several people desperate.”

Silence followed.

Lily finally spoke.

“Why did my mother have to disappear?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because you were the proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That the trust had a living heir.”

Lily shook her head.

“I don't understand.”

Daniel reached into his coat again.

He produced an old photograph.

It showed Michael holding a newborn baby.

I stared at the picture.

The baby was Lily.

Michael was smiling.

Not the distant, exhausted man I had known for eighteen years.

A young father.

Happy.

My throat closed.

“He loved her,” Daniel said.

I looked at him.

“Then why did he let me believe she was dead?”

“Because he was threatened.”

“By Reed?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Your father.”

My heart stopped.

“My father threatened Michael?”

“He told Michael that if Lily's existence became public before the trust investigation ended, she would be taken away.”

“By whom?”

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“By the people who had already tried to kill you.”

I sat down.

For years I had believed my father was distant, controlling, difficult.

I had never imagined him capable of something like this.

“Where is he now?”

“He's dead.”

“I know.”

“Then the people who worked with him may still be alive.”

A phone rang.

Not mine.

Daniel's.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?” Jake asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

The phone rang again.

Then he turned it toward us.

The caller ID displayed Michael's name.

Daniel answered.

“Hello?”

We heard Michael's voice.

“Daniel, get them out of there.”

Daniel stood.

“Why?”

“Because Reed knows.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Where?”

Michael's voice came through the speaker.

“Lily's building.”

The lights in the apartment suddenly went out.

Lily gasped.

A heavy sound came from the hallway.

Then another.

Someone was trying the door.

Jake moved toward the entrance.

Daniel grabbed him.

“Don't.”

The doorknob turned.

I looked at Lily.

She looked back at me.

For the first time, she reached for my hand.

“Mom.”

The word nearly broke me.

Then the door began to open.
