We spent the next morning trying to find Michael Price.
Elaine searched old records.
Kevin contacted the accountant.
I called the hotel manager.
Everyone had a different fragment.
Nobody had the whole story.
Michael had once worked with Daniel.
He had left the business after a dispute.
Some people believed he moved overseas.
Others believed he had died.
Elaine believed Daniel had told everyone Michael was gone because Michael knew too much.
“What did he know?” I asked.
“Everything,” she said.
The answer sounded almost too simple.
But the files supported it.
Michael had been involved in the construction company.
He had seen the transfers.
He had known about the forged documents.
And, according to Elaine, he had accused Daniel of stealing.
Then Michael disappeared.
Kevin found an old address.
It led to a small house in another county.
We drove there.
Nobody answered.
The curtains were closed.
A neighbor came outside.
“Looking for Michael?”
Kevin nodded.
The neighbor studied him.
“He hasn't lived here for years.”
“Do you know where he went?”
“Not exactly.”
“Did he have family?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
The neighbor shrugged.
“He left suddenly.”
“Did he say why?”
“He said he was tired of being afraid.”
I looked at Kevin.
“Afraid of Daniel?”
The neighbor frowned.
“I don't know any Daniel.”
We thanked him.
On the drive home, Kevin was silent.
Finally he said, “Maybe Michael wasn't at the wedding to hurt you.”
I looked at him.
“Then why?”
“To expose Daniel.”
That possibility changed everything.
We returned to Elaine's house.
She had found something.
A letter.
Michael had written it years earlier.
It was addressed to Elaine.
She had never received it.
“Daniel hid it,” she said.
The letter explained that Michael had discovered Daniel's scheme.
He had also discovered that Thomas intended to report him.
Michael had planned to help.
But before he could, Daniel threatened him.
Then Michael disappeared.
The final paragraph mentioned Patricia.
He said Daniel was using her as leverage.
He believed Daniel intended to use Kevin as another pressure point.
I looked at Kevin.
“This was never about the veil.”
“No.”
“The veil was just the easiest way to make Patricia look guilty.”
“Exactly.”
Elaine nodded.
“But why would Michael help?”
“Because he wanted Daniel stopped.”
We returned to the wedding footage.
This time, we watched every second.
Michael entered the bridal suite.
He took the red bottle.
He didn't open it.
Instead, he placed something beside the veil.
A small recorder.
Then he left.
Minutes later, Daniel entered.
He found the recorder.
His face changed.
He looked toward the door.
Then the footage ended.
Kevin stopped it.
“He knew he was being recorded.”
Elaine nodded.
“Maybe that's why Daniel left.”
“But someone spilled the wine afterward.”
“Yes.”
We watched again.
There was a gap in the footage.
A camera had been moved.
When the image returned, wine covered the lower edge of the veil.
Someone had deliberately created the appearance that Patricia had done it.
Then we noticed another detail.
A hand.
Only a hand.
A silver ring.
Kevin leaned forward.
“My aunt had that ring.”
“Which aunt?”
“My father's sister.”
“What was her name?”
“Rebecca.”
I looked at Elaine.
“Was she involved?”
Elaine shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Kevin called Rebecca.
She answered immediately.
“Kevin?”
“Were you at my wedding?”
“No.”
“Where were you?”
“At home.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Did you give anyone access to the bridal suite?”
“No.”
He ended the call.
Something was wrong.
He knew it.
I did too.
The ring in the footage was similar.
Not identical.
We couldn't accuse someone based on a blurry image.
Then Elaine remembered something.
“Daniel had another associate.”
“Who?”
“Martin Cole.”
Kevin frowned.
“Who was he?”
“Security contractor.”
“Was he at the wedding?”
“I don't know.”
We checked the vendor list.
There he was.
Martin Cole.
Temporary security.
Kevin called the hotel.
The manager confirmed him.
“He was assigned to the bridal wing.”
My stomach tightened.
“Do you have his contact information?”
“No.”
But his company name was listed.
We found it.
The company no longer existed.
Its address led to an empty office.
Then Kevin found a social media profile.
Martin had changed his name.
He was living three states away.
We contacted him.
He refused to speak.
Until Kevin mentioned Daniel.
Then Martin agreed.
The meeting took place the next day.
Martin looked exhausted.
He sat across from us.
“I knew this would come back.”
“What happened at the wedding?” Kevin asked.
Martin looked at me.
“I was told to make the veil look stained.”
“By Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He wanted Patricia blamed.”
“Why?”
“Because she had something he wanted.”
“The money?”
Martin nodded.
“Records.”
“What records?”
“Copies of everything.”
Kevin leaned forward.
“Who spilled the wine?”
Martin looked down.
“I did.”
I felt strangely calm.
The answer was finally here.
“Why?”
“Daniel told me.”
“Did you know about the corks?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know I was sober?”
“No.”
He looked ashamed.
“I didn't know.”
“Did Daniel?”
“Yes.”
Kevin's face hardened.
“How did he know?”
“Patricia told him.”
Patricia had never told Daniel directly.
But she had spoken about me.
Daniel had collected information.
He had used it.
Martin continued.
“I was supposed to spill the wine and take a photograph.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
He pulled out his phone.
The photograph showed the damaged veil.
Then another showed the red bottle.
Then another showed a note.
Kevin looked at it.
“That's the note Patricia said she threw away.”
Martin nodded.
“Daniel wrote it.”
I stared at the words.
You don't know what she's capable of.
The purpose had been clear.
Make Patricia think Nora was dangerous.
Make Patricia act.
Make everyone believe Patricia was responsible.
Then use the chaos to retrieve the business records.
“Did you get the records?” Kevin asked.
Martin shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Michael stopped me.”
“Michael was there.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“He took the records.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
Martin looked at me.
“He told me something.”
“What?”
“He said, ‘She doesn't deserve to pay for their lies.’”
I swallowed.
“She?”
“You.”
Kevin's hand found mine.
Martin continued.
“Michael knew about your sobriety.”
“How?”
“Daniel had shown him the photographs.”
“What photographs?”
Martin looked uncomfortable.
“Pictures of you leaving a recovery meeting.”
My heart stopped.
Daniel had been watching me.
Not just Patricia.
Me.
“For how long?”
“I don't know.”
“Why?”
Martin shook his head.
“He said you were the easiest person to use because your past could be turned into a story.”
Kevin stood.
“That ends now.”
Martin looked at him.
“I know.”
“Where is Michael?”
“I don't know.”
Then Martin reached into his jacket.
He placed a small memory card on the table.
“Michael gave me this.”
“What is it?”
“Everything.”
Kevin picked it up.
Martin stood.
“I was wrong to help Daniel.”
“Yes,” I said.
He nodded.
“I know.”
He left.
We sat in silence.
Kevin held the memory card.
“Everything.”
I looked at him.
“Then we finally have a chance to know the truth.”
That night, we opened the files.
There were financial records.
Photographs.
Messages.
And one video.
Michael was sitting in a car.
He looked directly into the camera.
“My name is Michael Price.”
He said Daniel had stolen money.
He said Thomas had discovered it.
He said Patricia had been threatened.
Then he said something that made both of us freeze.
“Thomas did not die knowing his son hated him.”
Kevin's eyes filled.
Michael continued.
“He died believing Kevin would someday understand.”
The video ended.
Kevin covered his face.
I put my hand on his shoulder.
Then another file opened automatically.
It was dated three days after our wedding.
Michael had recorded it from an unknown location.
He was holding a folder.
“The records are safe,” he said.
“But Daniel knows where to look.”
He paused.
“If you're watching this, I failed to stop him.”
The video ended.
Kevin stared at the screen.
“Failed?”
I looked at the timestamp.
Three days after the wedding.
Michael had still been alive.
And someone had known exactly where he was.
