PART 19 – The Person Who Betrayed Us Was the One Who Had Helped Marcus Survive the Last Eight Years

The name on the photograph belonged to someone Marcus trusted deeply.

Someone who had stood beside him when I was gone.

Someone who had told him, again and again, that leaving me had been the right decision.

Marcus could barely speak.

“I don't understand.”

Robert studied the photograph.

“We need evidence before we accuse anyone.”

“I know.”

But Marcus already understood what the photograph meant.

The person had access to family schedules.

Financial information.

Medical records.

Private conversations.

And most importantly, Marcus.

That person had been able to influence him after the false report.

Had been able to reinforce the lie.

Had been able to keep him from contacting me.

Had been able to tell Patricia exactly what Marcus believed.

Robert searched the old correspondence.

There were dozens of messages.

Nothing openly criminal.

But together they showed a pattern.

The person had repeatedly encouraged Marcus to stay away from me.

Had discouraged reconciliation.

Had told him Patricia was protecting him.

Had warned him that I might try to manipulate him through the children.

The messages were carefully worded.

Never threatening.

Never direct.

Just enough to keep Marcus afraid.

Marcus sat down.

“I trusted him.”

I reached for his shoulder.

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“How did he know about the medical report?”

Robert answered.

“Because he received a copy before Marcus did.”

We found the transmission record.

The false report had been sent to him first.

Then to Richard.

Then to Patricia.

Then to Marcus.

The timing was undeniable.

Robert called for investigators.

But before they could arrive, Marcus received a message.

COME ALONE.

He looked at me.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You don't go anywhere alone.”

The message included an address.

It was the old family office.

The place where Marcus had once worked with his father.

Robert insisted on going with us.

When we arrived, the building was empty.

The lights were off.

A single office door stood open.

Inside was a desk.

On it sat a folder.

Marcus opened it.

Inside were photographs of him and me from before our marriage.

Our first vacation.

Our engagement.

Our wedding.

Our children as infants.

The photographs had been collected over years.

Then Marcus found one photograph he had never seen.

It showed his father holding Adrian as a child.

Written underneath were the words:

“He was going to tell Marcus everything.”

Marcus's face crumpled.

“He knew.”

“Yes,” Robert said.

“He knew Adrian was his brother.”

“Yes.”

“And he knew Patricia was lying.”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked at the final photograph.

It showed his father entering the study on the night he died.

Behind him stood the family adviser.

And behind the adviser stood the same person from the other photograph.

The trusted family member.

Now there was no doubt.

The person had been present the night Marcus’s father died.

Robert turned the photograph over.

There was another message.

“Ask who opened the study door.”

Marcus stared at it.

Robert searched the old security records.

The study door had been opened at 9:17 p.m.

By an authorized family code.

The code belonged to Marcus.

But Marcus had been nowhere near the house.

Someone had used his code.

“Who had access to your code?” Robert asked.

Marcus thought.

“My father. Patricia. Richard.”

“And?”

Marcus froze.

“One other person.”

“Who?”

He said the name.

Robert immediately called the investigators.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“I remember that night.”

Everyone looked at her.

“I was outside the house.”

“What did you see?”

“The trusted person came out of the study.”

“When?”

“After your father collapsed.”

“What did they do?”

“They gave Patricia the bottle.”

I felt my breath catch.

“Did you see them poison it?”

“No.”

“Then what did you see?”

“The bottle was already open.”

Evelyn's voice shook.

“Patricia was crying.”

“Crying?”

“Yes.”

“She said your father had found everything.”

Robert asked, “What happened next?”

“Richard arrived.”

“And the trusted person?”

“They left.”

“Did they say anything?”

Evelyn nodded.

“They told Patricia, ‘He can't expose us now.’”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Robert asked, “Did they mention Calvin?”

“No.”

“Did they mention Daniel?”

Evelyn shook her head.

But then she remembered something.

“There was a second sentence.”

“What?”

“They said, ‘The boy in the other house must remain hidden.’”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Me.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That was why Patricia kept you away.”

The entire conspiracy suddenly became coherent.

Adrian had been the key to the trust.

Marcus had been the heir Patricia could manipulate.

I had been the person who could have remained beside Marcus and protected our children.

Daniel had been the person who discovered the fraud.

Marcus’s father had been the person who could expose it.

And the trusted family member had been the bridge connecting them all.

But there was still one question.

Why betray the family?

Robert answered after reviewing the financial records.

“Money.”

The trusted person had received payments for years.

But the payments were hidden.

The largest came from Calvin.

The person had been promised control over a separate investment portfolio once the family trust was dismantled.

Marcus looked at me.

“He chose money over all of us.”

I didn't answer.

Some betrayals were too large for words.

The investigators finally arrived.

The trusted family member was located at an airport.

Trying to leave the country.

They arrested him before the plane departed.

During questioning, he initially denied everything.

Then investigators showed him the photographs.

The financial transfers.

The access records.

The hospital transmission.

The study code.

His story collapsed.

He admitted introducing Calvin to Patricia.

He admitted giving Calvin information about the family.

He admitted helping Patricia keep Marcus away from me.

He admitted using Marcus's security code.

But he denied poisoning Marcus's father.

He also denied killing Daniel.

Those two questions remained open.

And then he said something that changed the final piece.

“Calvin ordered the accident.”

Robert leaned forward.

“Who carried it out?”

The man gave a name.

The same security contractor listed in the storage records.

Robert looked at me.

The chain was finally complete.

Not every crime had the same person behind it.

The conspiracy had been divided among several people.

Some lied.

Some stole.

Some altered records.

Some threatened.

Some watched.

And some simply stayed silent when they should have spoken.

But there was still one thing we needed before the case could truly end.

Proof of what happened to Marcus’s father.

And proof connecting the people responsible to the money they had stolen.

The investigators had the ledger.

They had the hospital records.

They had Richard.

They had Evelyn.

They had the trusted family member.

But the final evidence was still inside Margaret's wooden box.

The cassette had captured Richard's plan.

The trust showed the motive.

The ledger showed the money.

Now we needed the original recording that Marcus’s father had made before his death.

Margaret looked at me.

“There is one more compartment.”

My heart stopped.

She took the wooden box.

Pressed her thumb against the underside.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a small recording device.

Margaret whispered:

“Your father told me never to open it unless Marcus finally knew the truth.”

Marcus stared at the device.

Eight years after he walked away from me, he was finally about to hear the words his father had wanted him to hear before he died.
