PART 17 – Evelyn Was Waiting at Margaret’s House With the Evidence Patricia Had Been Trying to Destroy

We reached Margaret’s house just before noon.

The front door was open.

That was the first thing that made me afraid.

Margaret never left her door open. Not in the small town where she had lived for decades, and certainly not after everything she had told us.

Adrian ran ahead.

“Margaret!”

There was no answer.

Marcus caught Adrian by the shoulder.

“Wait.”

We entered together.

The house looked untouched at first. The same wooden table stood beneath the window. The same photographs lined the hallway. The same old clock ticked steadily above the fireplace.

Then I saw the overturned chair.

A cup lay broken on the floor.

Robert raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

A sound came from the back room.

Someone was breathing.

Adrian moved toward it.

We found Margaret sitting against the wall, one hand pressed against her forehead. She was shaken but conscious.

“Margaret,” Adrian said, dropping beside her.

“I’m all right,” she whispered.

“Where is Evelyn?”

Margaret looked toward the hallway.

“She took the box.”

My stomach dropped.

“The wooden box?”

Margaret nodded.

“What else?”

“The photograph. The cassette. Everything.”

Robert looked around.

“Did she hurt you?”

“No.”

“Did she threaten you?”

Margaret's eyes hardened.

“She didn't need to.”

A voice came from the kitchen.

“She knew I wouldn't leave without the evidence.”

Evelyn stepped into view.

She was older than I remembered from the photographs, but the face was unmistakable.

She held the wooden box against her chest.

Marcus moved forward.

“You.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I know.”

“You helped destroy my marriage.”

Her eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

“You worked with Patricia.”

“Yes.”

“You changed Kesha's medical record.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

Robert stepped between them.

“Then tell us exactly what you did.”

Evelyn placed the box on the table.

“I gave Patricia access.”

“To the hospital?”

“To the system.”

“How?”

“I had administrative credentials.”

Robert stared at her.

“My name was used to authorize the correction.”

“Yes.”

“My sister's credentials were used first.”

“Yes.”

“But you altered the record?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Patricia did.”

I felt the anger rise again.

“Then why did you say nothing?”

“Because Richard told me Patricia would destroy me.”

“That's not enough.”

“I know.”

She lowered herself into a chair.

“I was afraid.”

Robert remained standing.

“Afraid of Richard?”

“Of all of them.”

Evelyn told us the story slowly.

Richard had approached her through Patricia.

He said the family needed a medical record corrected before an inheritance dispute became public.

Evelyn believed it was administrative work.

Then she saw what Patricia entered.

The false pregnancy information.

The accusations.

The implication that I had betrayed Marcus.

“I realized immediately that it was fabricated,” Evelyn said.

“Why didn't you stop it?”

“Because Richard was standing behind Patricia.”

She swallowed.

“He told me that if I interfered, my career would disappear and my family would be ruined.”

Robert asked, “And after that?”

“I was trapped.”

She admitted receiving payments.

Some were compensation.

Others were silence.

But then Daniel discovered the records.

“He came to me,” Evelyn said.

“What did he know?”

“Enough.”

“What did he ask?”

“He wanted the original access history.”

“Did you give it to him?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked down.

“I was too frightened.”

Marcus stared at her.

“And Daniel died.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“Did Patricia order his death?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you know about the brakes?”

“No.”

Robert watched her carefully.

“Who was the financial adviser?”

Evelyn went pale.

“You found him.”

“We found his records.”

She looked at the floor.

“He was the person Richard was really working for.”

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Not Patricia?”

“Patricia thought she was in control.”

“She wasn't?”

“No.”

Evelyn explained that the adviser had approached Patricia years earlier with a plan to control the family trust.

Patricia wanted Marcus to inherit everything.

But Marcus’s father had discovered Adrian and changed the plan.

That was when the conspiracy began.

The false report was supposed to make Marcus believe he had been betrayed.

The divorce and separation would remove Kesha from the family.

The trust would then be rewritten.

But Marcus’s father refused.

So they needed another solution.

They created a network of transfers and shell companies.

The money could be moved without triggering an immediate audit.

“And the adviser?” Robert asked.

“He kept the largest portion.”

“What was his name?”

Evelyn finally said it.

“Calvin Mercer.”

I looked at her.

Mercer.

The same surname as Linda Mercer.

My heart stopped.

“Linda,” I said.

Evelyn nodded.

“Linda was his daughter.”

Suddenly the payments made sense.

Linda had not created the false report.

She had been part of the clinic network because her father had placed her there.

Daniel had known she wasn't acting alone.

Robert opened his notebook.

“Where is Calvin now?”

Evelyn looked toward the wooden box.

“That's why I came here.”

She opened it.

Beneath the old cassette was another envelope.

Margaret looked at Adrian.

“Your father gave me that too.”

I unfolded the letter.

It was written by Marcus’s father.

It named Calvin.

It described the transfers.

It explained the trust.

And at the bottom was one sentence that made Marcus sit down.

“If anything happens to me, Calvin must never be allowed to control my children.”

Robert photographed every page.

Then Evelyn reached into the box and pulled out a small key.

“This opens the storage unit.”

“What storage unit?”

“The one where Calvin kept the original financial ledgers.”

Robert looked at Marcus.

“The final evidence.”

Evelyn nodded.

“But there's a problem.”

“What?”

“Calvin knows we found the box.”

My phone vibrated.

One message appeared.

UNKNOWN NUMBER:

YOU HAVE UNTIL SUNSET.

I looked at the others.

A second message arrived.

LEAVE THE TRUST ALONE, OR THE CHILDREN WILL PAY FOR WHAT YOUR PARENTS STARTED.

Marcus took my phone.

His face became completely still.

Robert immediately called the investigators.

But before anyone could speak, Margaret pointed toward the window.

A dark vehicle was parked across the street.

It had been there before we arrived.

The driver was gone.

And on the windshield was a single folded piece of paper.

Robert went outside.

He returned less than a minute later.

He opened it.

Inside was one line.

“Calvin is not the man you need to fear.”

Robert looked at Evelyn.

She whispered, “Then who?”

I knew the answer was waiting somewhere in the final records.

For eight years, everyone had believed the enemy was Patricia.

Then Richard.

Then Evelyn.

Then Calvin.

But the person who had survived every discovery was still somewhere beyond our reach.

And whoever it was had just threatened my children.
