PART 11 – Richard’s Confession Opened the Door to a Deeper Crime, and the Evidence About Marcus’s Father Forced Us to Reconsider Daniel’s Death

We spent the night at Robert's office.

No one trusted the house.

No one trusted Patricia.

And after what we had learned, no one trusted the official story of Marcus's father's death.

The children remained with my sister under police protection.

I had never imagined saying those words about my own family.

Marcus sat across from me.

He hadn't spoken much since reading the medical report.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

He gave a tired smile.

“No.”

I nodded.

“At least you're honest.”

“I spent eight years believing I abandoned you because I was stupid.”

“You were manipulated.”

“I still made the choice.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I need you to tell me when I'm wrong.”

“I always have.”

A faint smile appeared.

Then disappeared.

Robert entered carrying two folders.

“The death certificate is real.”

Marcus looked up.

“The poisoning?”

“Not yet confirmed.”

“What do you mean?”

“The report is genuine, but the chain of custody is incomplete.”

Marcus frowned.

“So we don't know whether my father was poisoned.”

“Not conclusively.”

I appreciated Robert's caution.

After everything, assumptions had become dangerous.

He opened the first folder.

“Richard's signature appears on several documents related to the estate.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“Why?”

“He was your father's attorney.”

“That doesn't explain the transfers.”

“No.”

Robert placed copies of bank records on the table.

“Your mother moved money out of the trust.”

“How much?”

“Three million.”

“And Richard?”

Robert pointed to another account.

“Two million went to a company he controlled.”

Marcus stared.

“So they worked together.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Richard blame Mother?”

“Because they eventually turned on each other.”

I looked at the documents.

“What caused the split?”

Robert opened another page.

“Daniel.”

Marcus's expression changed.

“Daniel discovered the theft.”

“He confronted Richard.”

“And Richard threatened him.”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel know about the fake pregnancy report?”

“He knew enough.”

Robert handed me a transcript.

Daniel had written notes beside it.

He believed Richard had ordered the report.

But he also believed Patricia had altered the plan afterward.

“How?”

Robert pointed to one line.

Richard wanted Kesha to leave Marcus.

Patricia wanted the children erased from the trust.

They had different motives.

They had used the same lie.

That explained the contradictions.

Richard had commissioned the false report to separate Marcus and me.

Patricia had expanded the deception to control the children's inheritance.

Evelyn had carried messages.

My sister had provided records.

Linda had helped manipulate clinic files.

And Adrian had unknowingly supported a scheme he believed would protect his own inheritance.

The conspiracy had grown because every person had been given only part of the truth.

I looked at Marcus.

“No wonder Daniel couldn't explain it simply.”

He nodded.

“He was chasing several lies at once.”

Robert turned another page.

“There is one more problem.”

“What?”

“Daniel's death.”

The room went quiet.

Robert explained that Daniel had died in a car accident.

The official report stated that his vehicle had crossed the center line.

But Daniel's car had been inspected only briefly.

No mechanical failure had been recorded.

“No evidence of sabotage,” Robert said.

“Then why question it?”

“Because the brake lines were replaced afterward.”

Marcus stared.

“After the crash?”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

“We don't know.”

Robert showed us a photograph.

A mechanic's invoice.

The work had been paid for in cash.

The signature was Richard's.

Marcus stood.

“That proves it.”

“No.”

Robert shook his head.

“It proves Richard paid for repairs. It doesn't prove he caused the accident.”

Marcus sat again.

I could see the frustration in him.

He wanted certainty.

But certainty was exactly what had been taken from us eight years ago.

I reached across the table.

“Let the evidence speak.”

He looked at me.

Then nodded.

Robert continued.

“There is one way to determine whether Daniel's death was connected.”

“How?”

“His original vehicle.”

Marcus stared.

“You still have it?”

“No.”

“Who does?”

“The insurance company sold it.”

“When?”

“Two months ago.”

“To whom?”

Robert checked the record.

“An auction buyer.”

“Name?”

Robert looked up.

“Adrian.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian had been standing near the window.

He slowly approached.

“I bought the car.”

Marcus stared at him.

“Why?”

“I didn't know what it was at first.”

“When did you find out?”

“After I bought it.”

“What did you find?”

Adrian hesitated.

Then he reached into his coat.

He produced a small plastic bag.

Inside was a metal fragment.

“This was under the dashboard.”

Robert took it.

“What is it?”

“A piece of a recording device.”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Daniel recorded everything.”

Adrian nodded.

“He knew he was in danger.”

“Where is the rest?”

Adrian looked at me.

“I don't have it.”

“Who does?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Then he added, “But Daniel left a clue.”

He took out another photograph.

It showed a roadside.

A bridge.

A small diner.

On the back was written:

If the car is recovered, check the river marker.

Robert looked at the photograph.

“There is a river marker near the accident site.”

Marcus stood.

“Let's go.”

The site was outside Denver.

The bridge was old.

The river beneath it was nearly frozen.

A weathered marker stood near the guardrail.

We searched the area.

Nothing.

Then my sister called.

I answered.

“Kesha?”

“What happened?”

“Patricia's lawyer came.”

“What did he want?”

“He said Patricia wants to speak with you.”

I looked at Marcus.

“Where is she?”

“In custody.”

“What did she say?”

“She says Richard wasn't the only person involved.”

My heart tightened.

“Who else?”

My sister hesitated.

“She wouldn't say.”

I hung up.

Robert looked at me.

“She's buying time.”

“Maybe.”

Adrian pointed toward the river.

“There.”

A small metal box was wedged beneath the marker.

Marcus pulled it free.

Inside was a memory card.

Robert inserted it into a reader.

A video appeared.

Daniel.

He looked exhausted.

“If you found this, then I failed to protect Marcus.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“I need to explain what happened the night he left.”

I leaned closer.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“Richard created the report.”

No surprise.

“But Patricia altered it.”

Marcus opened his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“She added information that made Kesha appear to have terminated the pregnancy.”

My stomach turned.

“That information was not supplied by Richard.”

Daniel paused.

“It came from Kesha's sister.”

My breath caught.

Marcus looked at me.

Daniel continued.

“She did not knowingly fabricate the report.”

My sister.

“She gave Patricia the medical records. Patricia altered them.”

I exhaled.

That distinction mattered.

Not enough to erase my sister's betrayal.

But enough to explain it.

Daniel continued.

“Patricia told Kesha's sister that Marcus was in danger.”

Then his expression changed.

“Richard later used the altered report without knowing Patricia had changed it.”

Marcus whispered, “They were both lying to each other.”

Daniel nodded on the screen.

“They used each other.”

The video continued.

“The night Marcus left, your father confronted Richard.”

Marcus leaned closer.

“They argued.”

Daniel looked down.

“Your father knew the report was false.”

I felt my heart pound.

“He tried to stop Marcus from leaving.”

Marcus whispered, “Why didn't he?”

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“Because Patricia locked the study door.”

Marcus froze.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“She told your father she would expose Adrian if he interfered.”

The recording paused.

Then Daniel said the sentence that changed everything.

“Your father didn't die naturally.”

Marcus stared at the screen.

Daniel continued.

“He was poisoned.”

Robert looked at the medical report.

Daniel explained that his father had discovered evidence of the poisoning.

He had hidden it in the family study.

Richard had later removed it.

But Daniel had made a copy.

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Adrian whispered, “My father knew.”

Marcus looked at him.

“He knew you existed.”

“Yes.”

“And he tried to protect you.”

Adrian nodded.

“I didn't know.”

Marcus walked toward him.

For a moment I thought he might strike him.

Instead, he stopped.

“You should have come to me.”

Adrian looked down.

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

The two brothers stood facing each other.

Neither knew what to do with the years between them.

Then Robert received a call.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at us.

“Patricia has escaped.”

Marcus went still.

“How?”

“Transport vehicle.”

“Where is she?”

Robert shook his head.

“We don't know.”

I felt a coldness deeper than the winter outside.

Richard was in custody.

Patricia was gone.

And she knew exactly what evidence existed.

Marcus looked at me.

“We need to find her before she destroys the rest.”

Robert nodded.

“But there's another problem.”

“What?”

He showed us a message.

It had been sent from an unknown number.

Only five words.

Ask who raised Adrian.

Marcus stared at the phone.

Adrian's face changed.

“My foster mother.”

I looked at him.

“Who was she?”

He swallowed.

“Patricia's sister.”

The room went silent.

Another family secret.

Another connection.

Another person who might have known the truth.

We had spent hours believing we were finally reaching the end.

Instead, the trail had opened again.

And this time, it led directly into Adrian's childhood.
