PART 2 – Her Father Had Known for Weeks, but the Secret He Finally Revealed Made the Cosmetic Procedure Look Like Only the Beginning

Colin arrived twenty minutes later.

He didn't knock.

He came through the front door with the spare key he'd kept since we were married, and for a second I almost forgot we had been divorced for years.

Then I saw his face.

He wasn't angry.

He looked frightened.

That stopped me.

“What happened?” he asked.

I held up my phone.

“Tell me.”

He looked at the photograph.

His shoulders dropped.

“You got one.”

“You've seen this before?”

He nodded.

“How many?”

“Several.”

I stared at him.

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I was trying to handle it.”

“With our daughter?”

“Yes.”

I laughed once, without humor.

“That worked beautifully.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I know.”

“No, Colin. You don't get to say that.”

“I know.”

“You knew somebody was harassing her.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Three weeks.”

Brynn stood near the doorway.

“Dad, please.”

He turned toward her.

“I have to tell your mother.”

“No.”

“I can't keep this from her.”

“You promised.”

“I know.”

Her eyes filled.

He looked at me.

“She called me late one night.”

I folded my arms.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“What happened?”

“She was crying.”

Brynn looked at the floor.

“She said kids at school were making comments about her.”

“What kind?”

“Her mouth. Her teeth. Pictures.”

I felt my anger returning.

“And you did nothing?”

“I talked to her.”

“You talked to her.”

“I told her we'd figure it out.”

“And then?”

He looked at Brynn.

“She stopped answering my calls.”

“I didn't want to talk.”

“I know.”

“You didn't come over.”

“I was giving you space.”

“You gave me silence.”

Her voice shook.

Colin closed his eyes.

“I thought I was helping.”

“You weren't.”

I watched them.

For the first time, I saw how much my daughter had been carrying between two houses.

She had been trying to protect both parents from a problem neither of us fully understood.

“What did you think was happening?” I asked Colin.

“I thought it was ordinary school bullying.”

“Ordinary?”

“I didn't know how serious it was.”

“You saw the messages.”

“I saw some.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“I thought bringing you in immediately would make Brynn feel trapped.”

“She was already trapped.”

He looked at me.

“I know.”

Then his voice changed.

“She asked me something.”

“What?”

“She asked whether I thought she was ugly.”

Brynn turned away.

I felt my throat tighten.

“What did you say?”

Colin swallowed.

“I told her no.”

She shook her head.

“That wasn't what she wanted to hear.”

He looked at her.

“I didn't understand.”

“You never do.”

I stepped toward Brynn.

“What did you want him to say?”

“I don't know.”

“That you understood?”

She nodded.

“That you believed me.”

Colin's face fell.

“I did believe you.”

“You didn't believe me enough to tell Mom.”

He had no answer.

The room went quiet.

I sat beside my daughter.

“Why did Mallory give you the money?”

Brynn hesitated.

“She said she understood.”

“Understood what?”

“What it felt like.”

“To be bullied?”

“To hate something about yourself.”

I looked at Colin.

He seemed as confused as I was.

“Did she tell you to get fillers?”

“She said it was my decision.”

“But she gave you the money.”

“Yes.”

“Did she recommend the place?”

Brynn nodded.

“Did she go with you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“She said Dad would notice.”

Colin stared at her.

“She told you that?”

“Yes.”

His jaw tightened.

I could see something changing behind his eyes.

“What exactly did she say?”

Brynn looked nervous.

“She said if I told either of you, you'd make me see a doctor.”

“What kind of doctor?”

“I don't know.”

“Brynn.”

She began crying.

“The kind who asks questions.”

Colin looked at me.

Neither of us understood.

Then he reached into his jacket.

“I found something.”

He placed a small envelope on the counter.

“Where?”

“In Mallory's car.”

I stared at it.

“You went through her car?”

“I was looking for something.”

“What?”

“I didn't know.”

He pushed the envelope toward me.

“Open it.”

I did.

A photograph slid out.

It wasn't of Brynn.

It was me.

Standing outside my house with grocery bags in both hands.

The photograph had been taken from across the street.

I recognized the jacket I was wearing.

I remembered that afternoon.

It had been three days before Brynn first mentioned anything about her appearance.

I turned the photograph over.

A date was written on the back.

And underneath it:

She still doesn't know.

My fingers went cold.

“Who took this?”

“I don't know.”

“Who gave it to you?”

“I found it.”

“In Mallory's car?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Colin.

“You're telling me someone was watching me before our daughter even got the injections.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“That is what I'm trying to figure out.”

Brynn stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

I didn't want her to see.

But she did.

Her face changed.

“Mom?”

I folded the photograph.

“Go upstairs.”

“No.”

“Brynn.”

“I want to know.”

Colin spoke quietly.

“She deserves to know.”

I looked at him.

“Since when?”

He accepted the hit.

“Since now.”

Brynn sat down.

Colin pulled out his phone.

“There are messages.”

“With Mallory?”

“Yes.”

“Show me.”

He unlocked the screen.

Most of the conversation had been deleted.

But he'd saved a screenshot.

I read it.

Mallory: She thinks it's about her face.

The other person: Good. Keep her focused there.

Mallory: How long?

The other person: Until Valerie finds out.

I stopped breathing.

“My name.”

Colin nodded.

“They used my name.”

“Who is that person?”

“I don't know.”

“Does Mallory?”

“I think she does.”

Brynn whispered, “She asked me questions about Mom.”

I turned toward her.

“What questions?”

“About the house.”

“Which part?”

“When you leave.”

I stared.

“What else?”

“If the back door is locked.”

My skin prickled.

“What else?”

“She asked where you kept important papers.”

Colin looked at me.

I looked back.

Neither of us spoke.

Then a memory surfaced.

A folder.

My bedroom desk.

Three months earlier, I'd noticed that a folder I'd kept there had been moved.

I'd assumed I had misplaced it.

Now I knew exactly what was inside.

Our old divorce documents.

Bank statements.

Custody records.

And one set of business papers connected to Colin.

I turned toward him.

“Do you remember that folder?”

His expression changed.

“The blue one?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you had it.”

“I thought you did.”

We stared at each other.

Brynn's voice was small.

“What was in it?”

“Nothing that concerns you.”

Colin looked at me.

“That isn't true.”

I gave him a warning look.

He continued.

“There was a business document in that folder that could cause serious problems for someone.”

“Who?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“You're hiding something.”

“I've been trying to find out what.”

“By yourself.”

“Yes.”

“Again.”

He looked ashamed.

“I thought I could protect you.”

“You can't protect people by lying to them.”

He nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Who is it?”

He didn't answer.

The ringing stopped.

A message appeared.

He opened it.

Then he turned the phone toward me.

A photograph.

My bedroom.

My desk.

The drawer where I had kept the missing folder.

Underneath it:

You should have waited.

I looked at Colin.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

His eyes had moved to Brynn.

“Brynn.”

She looked up.

“Did Mallory ever come into your mother's bedroom?”

Brynn went still.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The night she gave me the money.”

My heart started pounding.

“What was she doing?”

“She said she needed something.”

“What?”

“I don't know.”

“Did she search the room?”

Brynn nodded.

“What did she tell you?”

“To stay downstairs.”

Colin sat down hard.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

The fillers.

The money.

The bullying.

The anonymous account.

Suddenly none of it seemed separate.

Someone had found a way to use my daughter as a distraction.

And I had walked straight into it.
