PART 15 – What Richard Knew

Richard looked older than Valerie remembered. His hair had gone almost completely gray, and the confident expression he used to wear in courtrooms and offices had disappeared.

Colin moved first.

“You lied to us.”

Richard didn't deny it.

“I did.”

“You told her our baby died.”

“I told you what I was instructed to tell you.”

Valerie stepped forward. “By whom?”

Richard looked at her.

“By Clara.”

Mallory inhaled sharply.

Richard continued. “Clara was not acting alone. The research clinic had been collecting information from families with certain genetic histories. Your pregnancy became valuable to them because of your family's medical records.”

Valerie shook her head. “You let them take my child.”

“I thought they were protecting the baby.”

“You thought?”

Her voice cracked.

Richard lowered his eyes.

“I was told the infant had a condition that required specialized treatment. They said the child would not survive without intervention. They convinced me that you would not understand the situation and that your grief would be easier than the truth.”

Valerie stared at him in disbelief.

“You decided my grief was easier.”

Richard had no defense.

Colin stepped closer. “Who paid you?”

Richard hesitated.

“That is the question you should ask.”

“I just did.”

Richard looked toward Ethan.

“David Mercer.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Richard explained that David had been managing financial transfers connected to the foundation. Payments had moved through shell companies, consulting accounts, and the trust established before Brynn's birth. The trust was designed to receive money connected to the child.

But there had been a problem.

Valerie and Colin had later separated.

The people controlling the arrangement feared that a divorce would expose the records.

So they altered the beneficiary.

Brynn's name was inserted.

“Why Brynn?” Valerie asked.

“Because she was legitimate. She existed. She was connected to both of you. And nobody would question why a trust in your family name benefited her.”

Colin stared at Richard.

“And Ethan?”

Richard looked at him.

“Ethan found out.”

Ethan said nothing.

“He discovered that the trust was not what it appeared to be,” Richard continued. “He started asking questions. David tried to stop him.”

“That's why you disappeared,” Colin said.

Ethan nodded.

“I ran because I knew what they would do.”

Mallory stepped forward.

“And Clara?”

Richard's face tightened.

“She never stopped.”

He explained that Clara had remained connected to the foundation. When the clinic officially closed, she continued maintaining certain records. She knew where the original transfer documents were kept.

“She also knew where Evan was.”

Valerie felt tears gathering.

“Who raised him?”

Richard hesitated.

“A woman named Helen Carter.”

Valerie remembered the name.

Her old neighbor.

The woman who had always been kind to her family.

“The same Helen?” Valerie whispered.

Richard nodded.

“Helen believed she was protecting the child. She was told you had died emotionally and that bringing you back into his life would put him in danger.”

Valerie closed her eyes.

She remembered Helen visiting her after the supposed loss.

She remembered Helen bringing food.

She remembered Helen sitting beside her while she cried.

All those years.

All those lies.

Brynn quietly asked, “Does Evan know?”

Richard looked at her.

“He knows he was taken from someone.”

“Does he know who?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus stepped between them.

“Where is Clara now?”

Richard looked toward the window.

“At the lake.”

Valerie's heart jumped.

“The house?”

Richard nodded.

“She's waiting for Evan.”

“Why?”

“Because the original document is there.”

“What document?”

Richard finally said the words they had been chasing for years.

“The original medical transfer agreement.”

Colin's expression hardened.

“And what does it prove?”

Richard looked directly at Valerie.

“That the child was transferred alive.”

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Valerie felt as if the floor had disappeared.

Alive.

Her child had been alive.

Not a medical possibility.

Not a rumor.

Not a hidden account.

Alive.

Brynn reached for her mother's hand.

“Mom.”

Valerie held on tightly.

Richard continued.

“But there's something else.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The transfer agreement contains the name of the person who authorized the child's new identity.”

Valerie felt dread settle over her.

“Who?”

Richard did not answer.

A crash sounded outside.

Marcus looked toward the window.

A car had pulled up beside the building.

Then another.

Richard whispered, “They're here.”

Colin looked at Ethan.

“Who?”

Ethan's face had gone pale.

“David wasn't the person in charge.”

Valerie turned toward him.

“Then who was?”

Ethan looked at Brynn.

“Someone who has been closer to your family than you realize.”

Mallory suddenly stepped backward.

“No.”

Valerie looked at her.

Mallory's eyes filled with fear.

“I know who.”

Before she could say the name, the building's fire alarm began screaming.

People shouted in the hallway.

Marcus grabbed the documents.

Colin pulled Valerie toward the exit.

Brynn stayed beside her.

Richard remained in the office.

“Come with us,” Valerie shouted.

He shook his head.

“If I leave, they'll follow you.”

Then he closed the door.

Valerie heard the lock click.

“Richard!”

No answer.

They ran.

Outside, the night air struck Valerie's face.

A dark vehicle sped away before Marcus could reach it.

He stopped and stared after it.

“Too late.”

Valerie looked toward the road.

“Then we go to the lake.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You don't understand. If Clara has the original, she may already know we're coming.”

Valerie tightened her grip on Brynn's hand.

“Then she can finally answer me.”
