Valerie recognized the house immediately.
It had belonged to her mother.
She had not been there since before Brynn was born.
“That's impossible,” Valerie said.
Richard looked at the photograph.
“No. Someone wants you to go there.”
Colin reached for Brynn's phone.
Another message arrived.
“Come alone.”
Valerie shook her head.
“I've spent too many years alone because other people decided what I was allowed to know.”
Marcus agreed. “Nobody goes alone.”
They drove to the old house together.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, everything smelled of dust and cedar.
Valerie remembered the living room, the narrow hallway, and the small staircase where she had once sat waiting for her mother to come home.
Then she noticed the wall.
One picture was missing.
Behind it was a small compartment.
Inside lay another envelope.
Valerie opened it.
Her mother's voice seemed to return through the words.
She had known about the pregnancy.
She had also known about the clinic.
But she had not known Daniel would be taken.
After Valerie was told the baby had died, her mother began investigating.
She discovered payments to Richard.
She discovered David's name.
And she discovered Helen Carter.
But before she could expose them, she became seriously ill.
The final page contained a confession.
“I failed my daughter once. I will not fail her child.”
Valerie cried silently.
Colin stood beside her.
“I should have protected you.”
“You were lied to too.”
“But I believed them.”
“So did I.”
Marcus searched the room while Ethan examined the old fireplace.
He found a metal container hidden beneath loose bricks.
Inside was a cassette tape.
There was also a handwritten label.
“Listen before you accuse anyone.”
They found an old player in the study.
The tape began with Evelyn's voice.
She said she had learned that Richard was not the mastermind.
David was not either.
They were middlemen.
The person directing everything had used family members as shields.
Then Evelyn said a name.
Valerie's breath caught.
It was Clara.
Clara immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Evelyn continued.
“Clara knows where the child is, but she did not begin this.”
The tape crackled.
Then came the revelation.
The person behind the original arrangement was a woman named Margaret Hale.
Valerie knew that name.
Margaret was Colin's aunt.
She had managed family investments for decades.
She had also been the person who encouraged Colin to trust Richard.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“Your investigation?”
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Margaret was on my list.”
Colin looked stunned.
“She died eight years ago.”
Richard stepped forward.
“She did not.”
Everyone turned.
Richard explained that Margaret had faked her death after Evelyn confronted her. She had disappeared under another name and continued controlling the accounts remotely.
“Why?” Valerie asked.
Richard answered, “Money.”
The trust had generated enormous payments over the years.
But there was another motive.
Margaret had believed the Reynolds family fortune should eventually pass through her branch of the family.
Daniel's existence threatened that plan.
Brynn asked quietly, “So she took him because of money?”
“No,” Richard said. “She took him because she believed controlling the child meant controlling the trust.”
Valerie's anger returned.
“She stole my son for an inheritance.”
“And she kept doing it because nobody stopped her.”
Clara looked toward the window.
“She knows the original document is gone.”
A car engine sounded outside.
Marcus turned off the lights.
Everyone became still.
A vehicle stopped in front of the house.
A woman stepped out.
She looked older than the photograph but unmistakable.
Colin whispered one word.
“Aunt Margaret.”
The woman walked to the door.
Then she smiled.
“It's time we talked.”
