PART 11 – David Had Planned the Escape Route Before We Arrived, but Mallory’s One Decision Gave Us a Chance He Never Expected

Marcus found the old maintenance corridor behind a row of filing cabinets.

The door was barely visible, painted the same gray as the wall.

“Through there,” he said.

We moved quickly.

Brynn stayed between me and Colin.

Ethan followed.

Mallory came last.

I didn't trust her.

But I didn't trust the person upstairs either.

The corridor smelled of dust and rust.

A single emergency light blinked overhead.

“Where does this go?” I whispered.

“Parking lot,” Marcus said.

“How do you know?”

“I've been here before.”

Behind us, a door slammed open.

David shouted something.

I couldn't make out the words.

Then the footsteps started again.

Faster this time.

Marcus pushed open the final door.

Cold night air rushed over us.

We ran.

A car horn sounded.

Headlights swept across the parking lot.

For one terrible second, I thought David had another vehicle waiting.

Then I recognized the car.

Police.

Marcus had called them before the lights went out.

Two officers stepped out.

David emerged from the office behind us.

He stopped.

The expression on his face changed.

He hadn't expected them.

One officer shouted, “Don't move.”

David raised his hands.

But then he looked at Mallory.

Not Colin.

Not Ethan.

Mallory.

She stared back.

Something passed between them.

Fear.

Recognition.

And something that looked almost like disappointment.

The officers approached.

David surrendered without a struggle.

I thought it was over.

I was wrong.

As they handcuffed him, he looked at me.

“You still don't know what Colin did.”

I felt Colin tense beside me.

The officer pushed David toward the patrol car.

But his words remained.

What had Colin done?

We returned to the hotel under police escort.

Mallory was questioned separately.

Ethan stayed with Marcus.

Brynn and I sat together.

She had finally fallen asleep.

Her head rested against my shoulder.

I watched her breathe.

Sixteen.

Sixteen years old.

And somehow she had been carrying secrets created before she was even born.

Colin sat across from us.

He looked broken.

I finally asked.

“What did you do?”

He didn't pretend not to understand.

“I lied.”

“About what?”

“About the original agreement.”

“You said you hid it.”

“I did.”

“So what did you lie about?”

He looked at Brynn.

“When she was born, I was told there had been a second document.”

“What document?”

“A settlement amendment.”

“What did it say?”

“That if the child was healthy, the trust would transfer.”

“To Brynn?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because the amendment named the research group.”

“And?”

“It gave them rights to access her medical records.”

I felt sick.

“So you destroyed it?”

“No.”

“You said you hid it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to protect her.”

I looked at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I knew you'd fight.”

“Yes.”

“And I was afraid they'd take her.”

“They couldn't.”

“I didn't know that.”

“You could have found out.”

“I was twenty-eight.”

“So was I.”

“I thought I was protecting our family.”

“You were deciding for our family.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

I looked toward the sleeping girl beside me.

“Did the trust ever pay for anything?”

“No.”

“Then why did money move through it?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus entered.

“We found something.”

I stood.

“What?”

He placed a file on the table.

“David's records.”

I opened it.

There were dozens of transactions.

But one account appeared repeatedly.

Mallory.

Another.

Ethan.

And a third.

Colin.

I stared.

“Why is your name here?”

Colin looked at the page.

“I don't know.”

Marcus pointed to the dates.

“These payments were made before Mallory met you.”

Colin frowned.

“That isn't possible.”

“Check again.”

He did.

His face changed.

“I didn't receive this money.”

“Then who did?”

Marcus turned the document around.

“Someone using your identity.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

“But someone had access to his information.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Your former attorney.”

My heart stopped.

“Why?”

“Because he handled your divorce.”

Colin stood.

“He had access to everything.”

“Exactly.”

I remembered the missing folder.

The bank statements.

The custody papers.

The sealed envelope.

The signatures.

Someone had access to our personal records.

Someone could have forged both our names.

Someone could have created the trust.

But why involve Mallory?

Marcus answered.

“Because the attorney needed someone inside Colin's life.”

I looked at Colin.

“Who was the attorney?”

He said the name.

I recognized it.

Richard Vale.

He had represented Colin during the divorce.

He had also helped prepare the original custody agreement.

And he had known about the pregnancy.

I felt sick.

“He knew about the baby we lost.”

“Yes.”

“He knew about Brynn.”

“Yes.”

“He knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

Marcus nodded.

“And he was the person who filed the amendment.”

I sat down.

“Then Richard is the person behind everything.”

“Not necessarily.”

Marcus pointed to one final document.

An email from Richard.

The message had been sent to someone whose name was redacted.

The subject line read:

The father still doesn't know.

I looked at Colin.

“What father?”

He didn't answer.

Ethan suddenly entered the room.

“I know.”

Everyone turned.

He looked at Colin.

“The father of the child you lost.”

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Ethan looked at Brynn.

Then at me.

“The pregnancy wasn't lost.”

I couldn't breathe.

“What?”

He swallowed.

“The baby was born.”

The room went silent.

Colin stood frozen.

“No.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

I stared at him.

“You're saying the child we thought we lost survived?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Ethan looked at Colin.

“You were told the baby died.”

My hands began shaking.

“Who told us?”

Ethan's voice dropped.

“Richard.”

Colin took a step backward.

“That can't be.”

“It happened.”

“Where is the child?”

Ethan hesitated.

“That is the secret everyone has been protecting.”

I looked at Brynn.

Then at Colin.

Then at Ethan.

“Tell me.”

He shook his head.

“Not here.”

“Why?”

“Because if I say the name, whoever has been listening will know we found the truth.”

I felt a cold pressure in my chest.

“Who is the child?”

Ethan looked at me.

Then toward the window.

And whispered:

“Someone you already know.”
