Emily lowered the photograph.
“Your husband wasn't just trying to help a stranger,” she repeated.
I looked at Dr. Rivers.
He gave me a small nod.
“What aren't you telling me?”
Emily took a breath.
“Mark was trying to make sure my transplant could still happen after he died.”
The words struck harder than I expected.
“You were his donor?”
“No. He wasn't a match.”
She glanced at the photograph.
“But he entered a paired donation program. His donation could help someone else, and another donor could potentially help me.”
I looked toward Dr. Rivers.
“That was the arrangement?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't Mark tell me?”
Emily's eyes filled.
“Because he thought you'd feel obligated to help me too.”
That answer made my anger falter.
Mark had always been like that.
He could turn a simple problem into a burden he carried alone because he couldn't stand the thought of someone else feeling responsible.
“How long have you been sick?”
“Years.”
“And Mark knew?”
“He found out after he found me.”
I stared at her.
“Found you?”
Emily nodded.
“My mother kept us apart after my parents separated. Mark spent years believing he had no way to reach me.”
She swallowed.
“When he finally did, I didn't want anything from him.”
“What changed?”
“He kept showing up.”
A faint smile crossed her face.
“He brought groceries. He fixed a broken window. He sat outside the clinic when I wouldn't let him come in.”
I imagined Mark doing exactly that.
Stubbornly waiting.
Never announcing how much he cared.
Emily wiped her cheek.
“He told me about you.”
“What did he say?”
“That you were the person he trusted most.”
My eyes dropped.
“He trusted me enough to keep this from me?”
“He was ashamed.”
“Of you?”
“No. Of himself.”
Emily looked down at her hands.
“He missed my childhood. He couldn't repair that. He thought silence was less selfish than asking you to carry another person's pain.”
I felt tears gathering.
“And the donation?”
“He wanted it to help someone.”
“And you?”
“I wanted him to stop.”
I looked at her.
She gave a broken smile.
“I told him I didn't want his death to become my second chance.”
That sentence stayed with me.
“You argued with him?”
“Every time.”
“What did he say?”
“He said it wasn't about dying. It was about choosing what his life meant.”
I closed my eyes.
That sounded exactly like him.
Emily reached into her bag.
“There’s one more thing.”
She handed me a folded document.
It was a letter from Mark.
This one was addressed to Emily.
I read only the first few lines before stopping.
“You're not supposed to be reading that yet,” Emily said.
I looked up.
“Then why bring it?”
“Because I need you to know he didn't make this decision for me.”
She took the letter back.
“He asked me to accept whatever happened without feeling like I owed him my life.”
I stared at her.
“And what happens now?”
Emily looked toward Dr. Rivers.
“That depends on whether the donation chain is still possible.”
The doctor nodded slowly.
“The medical team is reviewing it.”
“So Mark's plan isn't finished?”
“No.”
That frightened me.
Because Mark had died, but the decision he made was still moving forward through people who were strangers to me.
I touched my stomach.
“Cecelia deserves to know what her father did.”
“She will,” Emily said.
“But I need to know everything first.”
Emily nodded.
Then her expression changed.
“Sally, there’s something else Mark asked me to give you.”
She reached into her bag again.
This time, she pulled out a small flash drive.
My heart stopped.
“What is that?”
“He recorded something for you.”
I stared at it.
“When?”
“Two weeks before he died.”
I couldn't take it.
Not yet.
Emily placed it gently on the table.
“He told me you might hate him after hearing it.”
I swallowed.
“That sounds like Mark.”
She smiled sadly.
“He said you'd understand later.”
I looked at the flash drive.
Then at the woman who was my husband's daughter.
For the first time, I realized Mark had left both of us with pieces of the same unfinished conversation.
And neither of us knew what the final recording would reveal.
