PART 6 – Mark’s Recording Forced Me to Hear the Fear Behind His Silence, but One Sentence Left Me Wondering What He Still Hadn’t Told Me

I took the flash drive home that evening.

I didn't open it immediately.

I placed it beside the laptop and walked away.

Then I came back.

I stared at it again.

Finally, I inserted it.

Mark appeared on the screen.

He looked thinner than I remembered.

His hair was messy.

His face was tired.

But his eyes were unmistakably his.

“Hi, Sal.”

I covered my mouth.

His voice filled the room.

“I know you hate videos.”

I laughed through tears.

“That was always true.”

He smiled.

“I also know you're probably angry.”

He paused.

“You should be.”

I leaned closer.

“I kept something from you.”

My heart tightened.

“Not because I didn't trust you.”

He looked down.

“Because I was afraid you would love me enough to take on something that wasn't yours.”

He explained Emily.

He explained the transplant.

He explained the donation chain.

And then he admitted something that hurt more than the secret itself.

“I should have told you.”

I whispered, “Yes.”

On the screen, he continued.

“I wanted to tell you every day.”

He rubbed his face.

“Then I imagined you meeting Emily and feeling responsible for fixing everything.”

His voice cracked.

“You were already carrying our daughter.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“I couldn't ask you to carry my past too.”

I cried openly.

Mark continued.

“Emily isn't a debt.”

The words were quiet.

“She isn't something you owe me.”

He took a breath.

“If the donation helps her, I'm grateful. If it doesn't, that doesn't mean I failed.”

That sentence surprised me.

Because Mark had always measured himself by results.

He wanted things fixed.

Problems solved.

Promises kept.

But now he was accepting an outcome he couldn't control.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

“There's one thing I need you to promise me.”

I froze.

“Don't let Cecelia grow up thinking I was brave.”

I stared at him.

“Tell her I was scared.”

He smiled sadly.

“Tell her I was terrified of missing everything.”

His eyes filled.

“Tell her I wanted to stay.”

I pressed my hand against my stomach.

“Tell her I didn't choose death over her.”

The room went silent except for the recording.

“I chose what I could still give.”

I couldn't breathe.

Mark leaned closer to the camera.

“And Sally?”

I waited.

“Don't spend your life proving that you loved me.”

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

The screen went black.

Then my phone rang.

It was Dr. Rivers.

“The transplant team has an update.”

I stood.

“What happened?”

“The donation chain is still possible.”

I closed my eyes.

“For Emily?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

I felt relief before guilt immediately followed it.

Dr. Rivers noticed my silence.

“This is what Mark wanted.”

“I know.”

“No one is asking you to make another decision.”

I looked at the black laptop screen.

“That's not true.”

“What do you mean?”

“I have to decide whether to tell Violet everything.”

He was quiet.

“She deserves the truth,” I said.

“Yes.”

“But Emily does too.”

“Yes.”

“And Cecelia will someday.”

“Yes.”

I sat down.

“Then I want everything documented.”

Dr. Rivers agreed.

The next morning, Violet came to my house.

She looked exhausted.

“I heard about Emily.”

I stiffened.

“From whom?”

“Mark's attorney.”

I stared at her.

“Why would he call you?”

“Because there are estate documents involving her.”

I stepped aside.

“Come in.”

Violet sat at the kitchen table.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

“I knew Mark had found Emily.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“Why?”

“Because he asked me not to interfere.”

I sat opposite her.

“And you didn't?”

She looked ashamed.

“I tried.”

I almost laughed.

“That doesn't sound like not interfering.”

“I was frightened.”

“So was he.”

She nodded.

“He told me you were pregnant and that he wanted to make sure you were protected.”

“He should have trusted me.”

“Yes.”

Violet didn't defend him.

That mattered.

Then she said, “He was planning something else.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

She hesitated.

“Before he became sick, Mark had already arranged a trust for Cecelia.”

“I know about the trust.”

“No.”

Her eyes met mine.

“You don't know all of it.”

She reached into her purse.

She placed another document on the table.

It contained a handwritten note.

I recognized Mark's handwriting immediately.

There was a name at the bottom.

Emily.

I looked at Violet.

“What is this?”

“I don't know.”

I read the first sentence.

Then stopped.

Mark had written that if anything happened to him, Emily was to receive something that had belonged to his father.

I looked up.

“His father?”

Violet nodded.

“And what belonged to him?”

She whispered the answer.

“The old house.”
