We found a computer in Mara's study.
She closed the curtains.
I inserted Daniel's memory card.
One folder appeared.
Inside were dozens of files.
Video.
Audio.
Documents.
Photographs.
Brielle opened the first video.
The image shook.
Then Dr. Voss appeared.
He was sitting in an office.
Across from him was Martin Vale.
Vale looked younger.
Sharper.
Confident.
His voice was calm.
He asked about the girls.
Voss said their response was promising.
Vale leaned forward.
“How promising?”
Voss hesitated.
“Enough to justify continuing.”
Vale shook his head.
“Then don't.”
My chest tightened.
Voss asked why.
Vale answered that the treatment threatened another program.
The recording continued.
He instructed Voss to alter the report.
Voss refused.
Vale reminded him that his career depended on cooperation.
Then he mentioned Colette.
I stopped the video.
Nobody spoke.
Taryn was trembling.
“Play it.”
I looked at her.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
The video continued.
Vale told Voss that Colette was becoming difficult.
He said she had asked too many questions.
Then he gave the instruction that explained everything.
If Colette refused to cooperate, pressure the family.
The next file showed emails.
Threats.
Payments.
Altered medical summaries.
One document contained the original treatment results.
Another contained the false report sent to me.
I stared at both.
The difference was devastating.
The original report said the twins had shown measurable improvement.
The false report said there had been no meaningful response.
I remembered reading that second report in the hospital.
I remembered accepting it.
I remembered telling Colette that we had to be realistic.
She had cried.
I had thought she was grieving.
She had been furious.
Now I understood why.
Brielle closed the file.
“Dad.”
I looked at her.
“None of this changes what happened to us.”
“No.”
“But it changes why.”
“Yes.”
She looked down.
“I don't know whether I want to know anymore.”
I reached for her hand.
“You don't have to.”
Taryn looked at the screen.
“I do.”
She had tears in her eyes.
“I want to know.”
So we kept going.
The final recording showed Daniel.
He was alone in his car.
His face was bruised.
He spoke directly into the camera.
If you're watching this, I failed to stop them.
He explained that he had hidden copies with Mara.
Then he mentioned Colette.
He said she was planning to disappear.
He begged whoever found the recording not to blame her.
“She is trying to keep them alive.”
The recording ended.
Mara turned away.
Colette covered her face.
I sat motionless.
For twelve years, I had blamed the wrong person.
Not completely.
Colette had made choices.
She had left.
She had kept secrets.
But she had not stopped loving us.
That much was finally undeniable.
Then another document appeared.
A list of families involved in the program.
Beside several names were payments.
Beside others were notes.
One note caught my attention.
Hale family — unresolved.
I read it twice.
“What does unresolved mean?”
Mara leaned closer.
“I don't know.”
Colette went pale.
“I do.”
We looked at her.
“What?”
“They never considered the case closed.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Because they believed I still had evidence.”
I stared at the memory card.
“Which means…”
“They may have been watching us all these years.”
No one spoke.
Then Mara's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed almost immediately.
She hung up.
“Someone asked for this address.”
My heart sank.
“Who?”
“They wouldn't say.”
I stood.
“We need to leave.”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
She opened the back door.
“You should leave through there.”
We gathered the files.
Before I stepped outside, Mara stopped me.
“Emmett.”
I turned.
She handed me another envelope.
“Daniel wanted you to have this if you ever came.”
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
It contained only one sentence.
Trust the girls. They were never the problem.
I looked at Brielle and Taryn.
Then I understood.
For twelve years, I had thought I was the one protecting them.
Maybe they had been protecting me too.
We left through the back door.
As we reached the car, Colette looked toward the street.
A black SUV passed slowly.
She froze.
“That's him.”
“Vale?”
She nodded.
I started the engine.
The SUV continued past.
But this time, I didn't wait.
We drove away.
The evidence was no longer hidden.
And neither were we.
