Vale had vanished from the farmhouse.
His car was found abandoned near the highway.
His phone was inside.
His wallet was still in the vehicle.
No one knew where he had gone.
Elena immediately contacted authorities.
Daniel wasn't convinced it was a kidnapping.
“He planned something.”
Colette shook her head.
“Vale doesn't disappear without leaving a trail.”
We searched the farmhouse again.
This time, Taryn found a loose floorboard.
Beneath it was a metal box.
Inside was a handwritten map.
One location was circled.
An old chapel.
We drove there before sunset.
The chapel had been abandoned for years.
Inside, dust covered the pews.
Daniel walked toward the altar.
“Here.”
A small compartment had been built beneath the floor.
Inside was another recorder.
Vale's voice filled the chapel.
If you're hearing this, I've disappeared voluntarily.
Colette closed her eyes.
Vale explained that Grant wasn't the only person involved.
There had been a third group.
A private consortium that had funded the research and wanted exclusive rights to the treatment.
Grant had hidden the results.
Vale had protected the program.
But the consortium had controlled both men.
Its members had never appeared in official records.
They were investors.
Politicians.
Medical executives.
People whose names could disappear from documents with a single phone call.
I looked at Elena.
“Can we prove it?”
She nodded.
“If this recording is authentic.”
The recording continued.
Vale said he had kept one final document hidden.
It contained the consortium's membership.
He had given it to someone he trusted.
Daniel whispered, “Mara.”
We called her.
She answered immediately.
“Don't come here.”
“Why?”
“They're watching the house.”
My blood ran cold.
“Where are you?”
“I left.”
“Where?”
She gave us an address.
We drove there.
Mara was waiting in a parked car.
She handed Elena an envelope.
“This is everything Daniel gave me.”
Elena opened it.
Inside was the consortium list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Signatures.
And one name we recognized immediately.
Martin Vale.
Another was Elias Grant.
But the third name shocked us.
Dr. Samuel Voss.
Even after his death, his signature appeared on the agreement.
Taryn looked at the document.
“He wasn't only pressured.”
Daniel nodded.
“He was involved.”
Colette stared at the page.
“Then why did he confess?”
“Because he changed his mind.”
The pieces finally fit.
Voss had helped create the false diagnosis.
Later, he had regretted it.
Daniel had helped preserve his evidence.
And Colette had discovered the truth too late.
Elena photographed every page.
Then she sealed the originals.
“We release all of it.”
I looked at my daughters.
They nodded.
But before Elena could leave, Mara's phone rang.
She answered.
Her face went white.
“It's Vale.”
She put the call on speaker.
His voice was weak.
“I need you to listen.”
“Where are you?” I asked.
“Somewhere safe.”
“Who took you?”
“No one.”
“Then why disappear?”
“Because they found me.”
“Who?”
Vale hesitated.
“The consortium.”
He gave us one final location.
Then the call ended.
We drove through the night.
The place was an abandoned warehouse.
Vale was inside.
Alive.
Barely.
He had been beaten.
Daniel knelt beside him.
“Who did this?”
Vale opened his eyes.
He looked at me.
Then at my daughters.
“They know the evidence is going public.”
Taryn asked, “What do they want?”
Vale whispered:
“They want you to believe the treatment failed.”
I felt the old anger return.
For twelve years, that lie had shaped our lives.
Now we finally understood why they had needed us to believe it.
If the truth came out, every buried result would have to be examined.
Every altered record.
Every destroyed file.
Every patient who had been denied a chance.
Vale gripped my arm.
“There is one final thing.”
“What?”
“The treatment was never abandoned.”
He looked toward Daniel.
“They continued it.”
