PART 15 – A Recent Photograph Proved Michael and Elena Were Still Alive, but the Message Claimed Noah Held a Memory He Had Forgotten

The photograph was unmistakably recent.

Michael's hair was almost entirely gray.

Elena looked older too.

But neither could be mistaken.

They were alive.

And someone had taken the picture only weeks earlier.

Noah stared at the screen.

"That's them."

Harris photographed the phone.

"Do not reply."

The unknown number sent another message.

You have until tomorrow night.

Then:

After that, the truth disappears with them.

Noah looked at me.

"What truth?"

I didn't know.

The next message answered.

Ask him about Evan.

Noah closed his eyes.

"I was three."

"You may remember more than you think."

He shook his head.

"I don't."

Harris asked whether anyone had ever tried to help him recover childhood memories.

Noah said no.

Then he suddenly remembered something.

A sound.

A train whistle.

A red suitcase.

A man's voice saying, "Don't let him see you."

Everyone became silent.

"Whose voice?"

"I don't know."

"Was it your father?"

Noah shook his head.

"No."

"Elena?"

"No."

"Then who?"

He pressed his fingers against his forehead.

"I can't."

I moved closer.

"Don't force it."

But the memory had opened something.

He remembered a station.

He remembered being held.

He remembered Elena crying.

And he remembered a man kneeling beside him.

The man had shown him a photograph.

Evan.

"Why would he show you Evan?"

"I don't know."

Noah's breathing quickened.

Then he remembered the man's words.

"Your uncle is waiting."

Harris stared at him.

"Did you know what that meant?"

"No."

He remembered another detail.

A silver ring.

The man wore a ring with a black stone.

Harris immediately called the records office.

Richard Vale had worn such a ring.

It appeared in several old photographs.

But there was something else.

Daniel Mercer had one too.

The two men were connected.

Noah remembered the man's voice again.

He had told Elena that Evan was alive.

She had believed him.

That was the trap.

Elena went to meet Evan.

She disappeared.

Michael followed.

And Noah had been used as leverage.

The message had been designed to make Elena obey.

Harris pieced together the sequence.

Evan discovered the financial scheme.

Mercer and Vale threatened him.

Evan disappeared.

Elena found evidence.

They threatened Noah.

Michael tried to protect him.

The family scattered.

But something didn't fit.

"If Mercer and Vale wanted control," I said, "why let Michael and Elena survive for twenty years?"

Harris looked at the photograph.

"Because they needed something."

"What?"

"The evidence."

The missing financial records.

The originals Evan had hidden.

Michael had kept them.

Elena knew where they were.

And Noah might have known something without realizing it.

Harris asked Noah about his childhood.

Not about people.

About objects.

Places.

Songs.

Anything his father repeated.

Noah thought for a long time.

Then he said:

"A blue box."

"What was inside?"

"I don't know."

"Where was it?"

"My father's closet."

"What happened to it?"

"My mother took it."

"Do you remember when?"

"No."

He closed his eyes.

Then another memory surfaced.

Elena had hidden the blue box inside a wall.

Noah had watched her.

He had been told never to tell anyone.

I looked at Harris.

"Where?"

Noah shook his head.

"There's a room."

"What room?"

"A house."

"Which house?"

He opened his eyes.

"The one with the yellow curtains."

Harris searched old property records.

There were dozens.

Then Noah remembered the sound of water outside.

A river.

The house was near a river.

Harris narrowed the search.

An abandoned property appeared in the records.

Owned by a company connected to Richard Vale.

It had been sold years later.

But the old photographs showed yellow curtains.

We went there under police protection.

The house was empty.

Inside, Noah walked slowly through the hallway.

"This is it."

He stopped in a bedroom.

There was a section of wall beneath the window.

He pointed.

"Behind there."

Officers removed the panel.

A blue metal box appeared.

Noah stepped back.

His memory had been correct.

Inside were documents.

Financial transfers.

Names.

Account numbers.

Photographs.

And one cassette tape.

Harris found an old player.

The tape contained Michael's voice.

He sounded younger.

Tired.

"If you're hearing this, then something has happened to us."

Noah stared at the machine.

Michael continued.

"The records are not the important part."

The tape crackled.

"The important part is who helped us."

Elena's voice followed.

"Michael, they know."

"I know."

"We have to leave."

"We will."

Then a third voice entered.

A man's voice.

Noah immediately stood.

"I know him."

Harris stopped the tape.

"Who?"

Noah's face had gone white.

"That's the man from the station."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

The tape resumed.

The man said:

"Give me the box, and the boy walks away."

Michael answered:

"You don't get Noah."

The recording ended.

Harris looked at me.

"This proves coercion."

Noah stared at the cassette.

Then he noticed a label.

A date.

Twenty years ago.

And beneath it, handwriting.

Evan knows the truth.

We searched the box again.

At the bottom was a folded map.

A location had been circled.

Not the cabin.

Not the church.

A cemetery.

Harris recognized the name.

It was where Evan Ward was supposedly buried.

But there was no grave under his name.

Instead, the map marked an unmarked section.

Noah looked at me.

"If Evan wasn't dead…"

Harris finished the thought.

"Then he may be the person who knows where your parents went."

We drove toward the cemetery before dawn.

The sun had barely begun to rise.

As we entered the grounds, my phone received one final message.

The truth is under the stone marked 47.

We found stone 47.

There was no grave.

Only disturbed earth.

And beneath it, a metal box.

Inside was a photograph of Michael and Elena.

The date was three weeks ago.

On the back were four words.

We are still running.
