PART 9 – I Finally Told Brad What I Had Done to His Coffee, and His Reaction Was Nothing Like the One I Expected

Brad remained standing beside the living room table.

I was still in the kitchen.

The black mug sat beside the sink.

Neither of us seemed ready to move.

For months, I had wanted him to admit what he was doing.

Now he had admitted it.

And somehow, I felt worse.

"Sit down, Brad."

He looked at me.

"Are you going to tell me what happened this morning?"

"Yes."

I pulled out a chair.

He sat opposite me.

Margaret remained near the hallway.

I didn't want her listening to every word, but I also didn't want another conversation happening behind my back.

"Margaret, please stay."

She nodded.

I looked directly at my husband.

"I knew you were going to meet Chloe."

Brad closed his eyes.

"I figured."

"I saw her message last night."

He rubbed his forehead.

"What message?"

"The one about your cologne."

His expression changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely embarrassed.

I continued.

"She told you to wear the fragrance she liked."

He looked down at his shirt.

"Yes."

"And you wore it."

"I did."

I laughed without smiling.

"You didn't even bother pretending."

Brad said nothing.

I looked at the empty space on the table.

Then I told him about the coffee.

I didn't describe every detail.

I didn't try to make myself sound better.

I simply admitted that I had put something in his drink because I wanted to embarrass him during his meeting.

Margaret looked shocked.

Brad stared at me.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he asked a question.

"Did you understand how dangerous that could have been?"

I looked away.

"I wasn't thinking clearly."

"That doesn't make it harmless."

"I know."

His voice became firmer.

"Did you put anything else in it?"

"No."

He leaned back.

I could see the anger in his face.

And for once, I didn't blame him for being angry.

I had crossed a line.

I had told myself it was revenge.

But it had been a reckless thing to do.

Margaret stepped closer.

"Both of you need to stop hurting each other."

Brad looked at her.

"Margaret, please."

"No. I'm serious."

She turned toward me.

"What happened between you two has become bigger than either of you expected."

I looked down.

She was right.

I hadn't planned to spend the morning worrying about a missing phone and a pharmacy bag.

I hadn't planned to have my husband's sister sitting in our living room.

And I certainly hadn't planned to admit that I had deliberately interfered with his drink.

Brad stood.

"I need to call my doctor."

I looked up.

"Why?"

"Because of what happened this morning."

He picked up his phone.

I suddenly felt cold.

He wasn't shouting.

He wasn't threatening me.

He was simply taking the situation seriously.

And that made my actions feel even more real.

"Brad."

He stopped.

"I'm sorry."

He looked at me.

I meant it.

Not because I wanted him to forgive me.

Because I finally understood that anger didn't give me permission to put someone at risk.

He nodded slowly.

"I hear you."

Then he stepped into the hallway to make the call.

Margaret sat beside me.

I stared at the black mug.

"I thought I'd feel better."

She didn't answer immediately.

"About what?"

"Everything. Finding out the truth. Making him uncomfortable. Getting some kind of revenge."

Margaret looked toward the hallway.

"Did it work?"

I shook my head.

"No."

For a while, we listened to Brad speaking quietly on the phone.

He explained what had happened.

He answered questions.

Then he agreed to get medical advice.

I was grateful he was taking it seriously.

I also knew I had no right to minimize what I'd done.

When he returned, he looked at me.

"I've been told to get checked."

I nodded.

"Okay."

"And we need to talk about the rest of this."

I looked at the papers.

"The appointment?"

"Yes."

He sat down again.

I waited.

He picked up the document with the date printed at the top.

"This was supposed to be the beginning of something good."

I looked at him.

"Then why did you make it so difficult?"

He didn't answer.

He turned the paper around.

I could see the appointment details more clearly now.

It was connected to the family-planning consultation we'd discussed months earlier.

Brad had contacted a specialist.

He had arranged for us to receive information about our options.

He had also asked for a preliminary review of the records from our previous consultations.

I remembered those appointments.

I remembered how hopeful we'd been.

Then life had become complicated.

We stopped talking about children.

We stopped talking about almost everything.

I looked at him.

"Why did you continue arranging this without me?"

"Because I wanted to surprise you."

I shook my head.

"That isn't something you surprise your wife with."

"I know that now."

I placed the paper down.

"And Chloe?"

He took a breath.

"She helped with the arrangements."

"Did she help with anything else?"

He looked at Margaret.

Then back at me.

"Yes."

I waited.

"She knew I was having problems in my marriage. I started talking to her too much. Then it became personal."

"Personal enough to sleep with her?"

Brad lowered his head.

"Yes."

I felt my throat tighten.

There it was again.

The simple truth.

No matter how much we discussed the appointment, the paperwork, or the pharmacy bag, the affair remained.

I looked at him.

"Did you tell her about our plans for a family?"

"Yes."

"Did you tell her we were trying to work things out?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me something.

"Brad?"

"I told her we weren't happy."

"That wasn't my question."

He looked at me.

"I told her I might leave."

I stood.

I couldn't sit there listening to him describe our marriage as though I had never been part of it.

"You might leave?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

"And you never once discussed that possibility with me?"

"No."

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the neighbor had finished watering her plants.

She was now carrying a small basket toward her front door.

I watched her disappear inside.

I wondered how many ordinary mornings she had lived without knowing what was happening in the house next door.

Brad spoke again.

"I know I have no excuse."

I turned around.

"Then stop looking for one."

He nodded.

I looked at Margaret.

She was crying quietly.

I didn't know whether she felt sorry for me or disappointed in her brother.

Maybe both.

I sat down again.

There was one thing I needed to know.

"Brad, did you ever intend to tell me about Chloe?"

He took a long breath.

"Yes."

"When?"

He looked at the papers.

"Before today."

I shook my head.

"That isn't an answer."

He finally met my eyes.

"I was going to tell you after the appointment."

I felt a bitter smile appear.

"So you planned to keep lying until you had finished arranging something for me."

He didn't deny it.

I looked at the pharmacy bag.

The bag with my name.

The bag that had seemed so mysterious only hours earlier.

I no longer saw it as a surprise.

I saw it as another reminder that Brad had decided what was best for me without asking what I wanted.

And I knew that had to change.
