Chloe arrived later that afternoon.
I heard the doorbell.
Brad stood up immediately.
I remained seated.
He looked at me.
"Do you want me to answer?"
I nodded.
He opened the door.
Chloe stood outside.
She wasn't dressed the way I'd seen her in the photographs from Brad's office gathering.
She wore a plain coat and carried a small handbag.
Her hair was tied back.
She looked nervous.
When she saw me, she stopped.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Then she stepped inside.
"Hello."
I looked at her.
"Hello, Chloe."
Brad closed the door.
The three of us stood in the hallway.
It felt uncomfortable.
This was the woman whose name had appeared on my husband's phone.
The woman whose message had made me question everything.
And now she was standing inside the house where I'd spent years believing my marriage was safe.
I pointed toward the living room.
"Please sit."
She sat on the edge of the sofa.
Brad remained standing.
I looked at him.
"You can sit too."
He took the chair opposite her.
I stayed where I was for a moment.
Then I sat beside the table.
The pharmacy bag was still there.
I hadn't moved it.
Chloe noticed it.
Her eyes lingered on my name.
"I see you found everything."
I looked at her.
"Yes."
She lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
I didn't respond.
I wanted to know what she was apologizing for.
The affair?
The messages?
The appointment?
Or the fact that she had been helping my husband arrange something personal while sleeping with him?
I asked her directly.
"Did you know Brad and I were still together?"
She looked at Brad.
Then she looked at me.
"Yes."
I waited.
She continued.
"At first, he told me you were separated."
Brad looked down.
Chloe's hands were folded tightly in her lap.
"He said you were only staying in the same house because of practical arrangements."
I felt my throat tighten.
"Did you believe him?"
"At first."
"And later?"
She took a breath.
"Later, I realized things weren't as he had described them."
I looked at Brad.
He didn't speak.
I turned back to Chloe.
"Then why did you continue?"
She looked embarrassed.
"Because I had feelings for him."
I nodded slowly.
At least she wasn't pretending she had been completely innocent.
I continued.
"Did he tell you he loved me?"
She looked at Brad again.
Then she answered.
"He said your marriage was complicated."
That wasn't what I'd asked.
I repeated the question.
"Did he tell you he loved me?"
Chloe swallowed.
"Yes. He said he cared about you, but that things had changed."
I looked at my husband.
He stared at the floor.
I felt something inside me become very quiet.
Chloe continued.
"I believed he was going to leave. He told me that several times."
I asked her whether she knew about our plans to have a family.
She nodded.
"Yes."
"How?"
"He talked about the appointment."
I looked at the paperwork.
"Did he tell you it was for both of us?"
She hesitated.
"Yes."
"Did he tell you I knew he was arranging it?"
She looked uncomfortable.
"Not exactly."
I waited.
"He said you had discussed it before and that he wanted to surprise you."
I looked at Brad.
That was the story he had told both of us.
He had told me the appointment was something he was arranging because he wanted to rebuild our future.
He had told Chloe it was part of a marriage that was already ending.
Two different stories.
One husband.
Two women.
And somehow, both stories had been built around the same appointment.
I leaned forward.
"Chloe, why did you send that message?"
She looked at the phone.
"Because I was tired of helping him hide things."
I stared at her.
"You helped him hide the affair."
She nodded.
"I know."
"And now you're tired?"
Her eyes filled.
"Yes."
I didn't feel sorry for her.
Not yet.
But I wanted to understand.
She explained that Brad had asked her to bring the pharmacy documents to the house.
He had also asked her to make sure I received the appointment information.
She had agreed.
But she had refused to continue pretending that everything was normal.
She wanted him to tell me the truth.
I listened.
Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since I first read her message.
"What exactly did you do that Brad asked you to do?"
Chloe looked at the pharmacy bag.
"I collected the paperwork and the items he had arranged."
"And?"
She hesitated.
"I also contacted the office to confirm the appointment."
I looked at Brad.
He nodded.
"That's true."
I turned back to her.
"Why didn't you simply bring everything here?"
She looked down.
"Because I couldn't face you."
I almost laughed.
"Neither could I face you, Chloe. But I didn't spend months sleeping with your husband."
She closed her eyes.
"I know."
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Chloe reached into her handbag.
She removed a small folded envelope.
Brad immediately looked at it.
I noticed.
"What is that?"
Chloe placed it on the table.
"It's the final paperwork he asked me to collect."
I looked at Brad.
"Why didn't you tell me there was another envelope?"
He rubbed his forehead.
"I thought it was included with the other documents."
Chloe shook her head.
"No. This one was separate."
I picked it up.
My name was written across the front.
Again.
I looked at the handwriting.
It wasn't Brad's.
It was printed by the office.
I opened it.
Inside was a confirmation sheet and a note explaining that the appointment had been postponed at Brad's request.
Nothing had been finalized.
Nothing had happened without my consent.
I felt relieved.
Then I saw something else.
A handwritten note from Chloe.
It was short.
"Please don't let him tell you that I knew everything from the beginning. I didn't. But I should have stopped when I realized the truth."
I read it twice.
Then I placed it on the table.
I looked at her.
"Why are you telling me this now?"
She met my eyes.
"Because I don't want him using me as another excuse."
Brad looked up.
"Chloe."
She turned toward him.
"No, Brad. You need to stop."
The room became silent.
She looked at me again.
"He told me your marriage was over. He told me you both understood that. Then I discovered you were still sharing a bedroom and planning appointments together."
I felt my face grow hot.
Chloe continued.
"I should have walked away. I didn't. That's my responsibility."
For the first time, I believed she understood at least part of the damage.
But understanding wasn't forgiveness.
I looked at Brad.
"Did you tell her I knew about the affair?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"Did you tell her I was waiting for you to decide whether you wanted to stay married?"
He shook his head again.
"No."
I looked at Chloe.
"Did he tell you I was trying to make our marriage work?"
She shook her head.
"Not in those words."
I nodded.
There it was.
The same marriage.
Two completely different versions.
And I had been living in the one where I still believed my husband was coming home to me.
I stood up.
"I think this conversation needs to end for today."
Chloe rose.
"I'm sorry."
I looked at her.
"I heard you."
She walked toward the entrance.
Brad followed her, but I stopped him.
"Let her leave on her own."
He stepped back.
Chloe opened the door.
Before leaving, she turned toward me.
"There's one more thing you should know."
I waited.
She looked at Brad.
Then she spoke.
"The appointment wasn't the only thing he asked me to arrange."
I felt my stomach tighten.
Brad's expression changed immediately.
And I understood that even after everything we'd discussed, there was still something he hadn't told me.
