Vanessa sat down slowly.
“No.”
Daniel placed the document in front of her.
“You can read it.”
She didn't touch it.
Mark picked it up instead.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at his wife.
“Vanessa.”
She covered her face.
“I didn't know what it was.”
Ethan stood.
“What did you request?”
She looked at him.
“I thought it was an investigation.”
“Into what?”
“Into you.”
The room became silent.
I felt my stomach drop.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought there was money being hidden.”
“There wasn't.”
“I know that now.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because by the time I found out, I was already ashamed.”
I stared at her.
“That's not enough.”
“I know.”
Daniel placed another document on the table.
“This request was made before Leah and Ethan met.”
I looked at Ethan.
He nodded slowly.
“I remember the investigation.”
“You were investigated because of her?”
“Not entirely.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Ethan's former business partner was already under suspicion.”
“So Vanessa didn't cause it.”
“No.”
“But she added information.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Vanessa.
“What information?”
She closed her eyes.
“I told them you had debt from Nora's treatment.”
Ethan's face tightened.
“You told them that?”
“I thought it mattered.”
“It didn't.”
“I know.”
Daniel explained that the investigators had eventually determined Ethan had not concealed assets.
The settlement had been delayed because the company dispute became complicated.
But the delay had cost Ethan months.
Then years.
By the time the funds were released, the original company had collapsed and the payment had become tangled in a separate legal process.
Ethan had never received the full amount.
“How much was eventually recovered?” I asked.
Daniel gave the figure.
It was enough to make me stare at him.
Ethan laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“All those years.”
I reached for his hand.
He squeezed mine.
Vanessa began crying.
“I didn't know.”
“You knew enough to ask,” Ethan said.
She looked at him.
“I was trying to protect Leah.”
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“You were trying to control her.”
Vanessa didn't argue.
That was what made it hurt.
Julian finally spoke.
“She asked me to find out whether Ethan had hidden money.”
I looked at him.
“And did you?”
“Yes.”
“What did you find?”
“That Ethan had nothing hidden.”
“Did you tell her?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she continue?”
Julian looked at Vanessa.
“You didn't believe me.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I believed what I wanted to believe.”
The honesty was devastating.
Daniel closed the folder.
“There is one more issue.”
I almost laughed.
Of course there was.
“What now?”
“The person who redirected the settlement information wasn't Vanessa.”
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed to the document.
“She requested an investigation.”
“But someone else changed the payment instructions.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Your former business partner.”
Ethan went still.
“He's alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Out of state.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because the case wasn't connected to you anymore.”
Julian interrupted.
“Until recently.”
I looked at him.
“What changed?”
“Daniel found another transfer.”
He placed a bank record on the table.
The account receiving the money was connected to a consulting company.
The company name meant nothing to me.
Then Mark read it aloud.
“Prescott Advisory.”
I looked at Julian.
His expression changed.
“That company isn't mine.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
“Then why use my name?”
“To make the transfer look legitimate.”
Julian leaned back.
“Who owned it?”
Daniel slid another document forward.
The owner was a man named Gregory Hale.
Ethan stared at the name.
“That's my old partner's attorney.”
Daniel nodded.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked confused.
“Why would he use Julian's name?”
“Because someone gave him access to the information,” Daniel said.
“Who?”
He hesitated.
“That's what we're trying to establish.”
I looked at Mark.
“Did Vanessa know Gregory?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Ethan suddenly spoke.
“I did.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He came to me once.”
“When?”
“After Nora died.”
“What did he want?”
“He asked whether I'd found the missing settlement.”
I frowned.
“You never told me.”
“I didn't think it mattered.”
I squeezed his hand.
He looked at me.
“I know.”
Daniel asked, “What else did he say?”
Ethan thought.
“He said someone had been asking questions about me.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Did he mention Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Julian?”
“No.”
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the table.
“Vanessa.”
She raised her eyes.
“Did you ever speak to Gregory Hale?”
“No.”
“Think carefully.”
“I did.”
“When?”
She swallowed.
“Once.”
“When?”
“About four years ago.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why?”
She looked at him.
“Because I wanted to know whether you were financially stable.”
I closed my eyes.
Again.
Another decision.
Another attempt to investigate my future husband before I even knew him.
“What did he tell you?”
“That you were in debt.”
“Anything else?”
She shook her head.
“I don't remember.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I think you do.”
Vanessa's face tightened.
“You're accusing me of something I didn't do.”
“No.”
Daniel's voice was calm.
“I'm saying someone gave Gregory information.”
He pointed toward a line on the statement.
“The information came from a private family account.”
I looked at Vanessa.
“What family account?”
She didn't answer.
Mark did.
“Ours.”
Vanessa turned toward him.
“What?”
“The account you used to pay Julian's investigation fees.”
I stared at her.
“You paid Julian to investigate Ethan?”
She nodded weakly.
“How much?”
She gave the amount.
I felt numb.
All those dinners.
All those comparisons.
All those conversations.
They had not been spontaneous.
She had spent money trying to prove that I was making the wrong choice.
Ethan looked at me.
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
Vanessa started crying.
“I thought I was saving you.”
I stood.
“No.”
She looked up.
“You weren't saving me.”
I picked up the folder.
“You were trying to write my future for me.”
Nobody stopped me when I walked toward the door.
But before I reached it, Daniel said one final thing.
“Leah.”
I turned.
“The investigation isn't over.”
He looked at the documents.
“And there is a possibility the person who manipulated the settlement still has access to the same records.”
I looked at Ethan.
His face had gone serious.
For the first time, the old story about Vanessa, Julian, and our wedding seemed smaller than the problem in front of us.
Someone had been moving money.
Someone had known intimate details about Ethan's finances.
And someone had been watching our lives long before the eighteen-dollar donut cake ever became a family joke.
