PART 6 – The Flash Drive Held More Than Old Messages, and One Conversation Revealed Why Vanessa Had Been So Certain Ethan Would Leave Me

The flash drive sat between the coffee cups.

It was tiny.

Almost ridiculous compared with the weight everyone seemed to attach to it.

Vanessa stared at it as though it were something dangerous.

I looked at Mark.

“What is on there?”

“Messages.”

“Between who?”

“Vanessa and Julian.”

Vanessa's chair scraped backward.

“You had no right.”

Mark looked at her.

“You gave me every reason to keep them.”

“You said you deleted them.”

“I said I wasn't going to use them against you.”

“And now you are.”

“No.”

Mark's voice was quiet.

“Now Leah is asking questions.”

I picked up the drive.

My hand was steady.

That surprised me.

Three years of doubt had suddenly become something tangible.

A letter.

A flash drive.

A chain of decisions I had never known existed.

I looked at Ethan.

“Do you want me to see this?”

He nodded.

“You should.”

We moved to a small booth near the back of the diner.

The waitress brought us fresh coffee without asking.

Vanessa and Mark sat across from us.

Nobody touched the donuts.

The little sugar flowers had begun to lean slightly to one side.

I almost smiled at the thought that this morning I had been worried about whether Vanessa would laugh at the cake.

Now the cake seemed like the least important thing in the room.

Mark opened the first file on his laptop.

It was a conversation from nearly three years earlier.

Vanessa had written to Julian.

She had told him Leah was serious about Ethan.

Julian had replied that he didn't want to interfere with another man's relationship.

Then Vanessa had written something that made my chest tighten.

She said Ethan would eventually break under the debt.

I looked at him.

He read over my shoulder.

The next message was from Julian.

He warned Vanessa that people weren't problems to be solved.

She responded that she knew her sister better than he did.

I scrolled.

There were weeks of messages.

Some were ordinary.

Some were about me.

Some were about Ethan.

And some were about money.

Vanessa had asked Julian whether he would ever consider helping Ethan financially.

Julian had refused.

He said that if he helped, Ethan might feel obligated to him.

Vanessa had responded that obligation was exactly what she wanted.

I stopped.

“What?”

Ethan read the line.

His jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa whispered, “I was angry.”

“That isn't an explanation.”

“I wanted Ethan to understand that he couldn't keep dragging you through financial problems.”

“So you wanted Julian to make him dependent on him?”

“No.”

“That is what you wrote.”

She looked down.

“I thought if Ethan accepted help from Julian, you'd realize how different their lives were.”

I stared at her.

“You wanted my husband to owe something to the man you wanted me to marry?”

“I didn't think of it that way.”

“You wrote it.”

She had no answer.

Mark opened another file.

This one was an audio recording.

I looked at him.

“You recorded them?”

“No.”

“Then how did you get it?”

“Julian sent it.”

I pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the small space.

She sounded younger.

More confident.

She was speaking to Julian.

“I don't understand why you won't just tell her the truth.”

Julian's voice followed.

“Because the truth isn't mine to use.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You're making this more complicated than it needs to be.”

“I don't want Leah because she is useful to you.”

There was silence.

Then Vanessa said something that made my stomach turn.

“You don't know what Ethan is capable of.”

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

“What did she mean?”

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“It wasn't what you think.”

“Then tell me.”

She rubbed her forehead.

“I found something about Ethan.”

“What?”

“Before you met him.”

My heart began pounding.

“This again.”

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“You had a business partner.”

Ethan's face changed.

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He stole from the company.”

“And Ethan took the blame?”

Ethan frowned.

“Where did you hear that?”

“Julian told me.”

Ethan shook his head.

“That isn't what happened.”

“Then what happened?”

Ethan sat back.

“We were running a small contracting business.”

He looked embarrassed.

“My partner falsified invoices. When the company started collapsing, he disappeared.”

“What did you do?”

“I reported it.”

“Did you lose money?”

“Yes.”

“Did you go into debt?”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone accuse you?”

“For a while.”

“Were you arrested?”

“No.”

Vanessa said, “There were police involved.”

“Because he reported the fraud,” Ethan said.

Vanessa looked down.

“I thought he had been hiding something.”

“You thought.”

She nodded.

“I was wrong.”

The admission was quiet.

But it didn't erase what she had done.

I looked back at the messages.

There was another conversation.

This one was dated eighteen months earlier.

Vanessa had asked Julian whether he could investigate Ethan's financial history.

Julian had responded that he already had.

He wrote that Ethan had made mistakes but had never stolen from anyone.

He had also written that Ethan had paid debts that weren't entirely his responsibility.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.”

She nodded.

“You knew Ethan wasn't what you claimed.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Her eyes filled again.

“Because I believed you deserved more.”

I shook my head.

“No. You believed you knew better.”

She didn't argue.

The next file contained a message from Julian.

He told Vanessa he was stepping away.

He said he would not participate in manipulating Leah.

He also said that if Vanessa continued, he would tell me everything himself.

I looked at the date.

Three months later, Vanessa had intensified her efforts.

That was when she began arranging dinners where Julian would appear.

That was when she started talking about yachts and properties.

That was when she began comparing Ethan's life with Julian's.

I closed the laptop.

“I want to know why you kept going after Julian refused.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“I was embarrassed.”

“About what?”

“I had spent so long telling everyone Ethan wasn't good enough that admitting I was wrong felt impossible.”

The confession was painfully human.

It didn't make me forgive her.

But it made the years of pressure suddenly make sense.

I looked at Ethan.

He was staring at the floor.

“What about the hospital account?” I asked.

Julian had written that he had helped Nora.

Vanessa knew.

Mark knew.

Ethan had known only after she died.

But there was something else.

A final file.

Its title was dated the morning of our wedding.

I opened it.

It was a message from Julian to Mark.

He wrote that he had learned something about Nora's treatment account that even Ethan had never known.

I stopped breathing.

“What does it say?”

Mark leaned closer.

I read the first sentence.

Then my eyes moved to the second.

The money Julian had provided had not come from his foundation.

It had come from someone else.

Someone whose name I recognized immediately.

My mother.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying again.

“Why was Mom paying Nora's medical bills?”

Vanessa whispered the answer.

“She wasn't paying them.”

I stared at her.

“Then whose money was it?”

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

And Ethan finally said the name.

“Mine.”
