Ethan pulled out a cream-colored envelope.
It was thick.
Not the kind of envelope used for a birthday card or an ordinary letter.
There was no return address.
Only two dark blue initials were printed across the front.
J.P.
My heart gave a strange little jump.
I knew those initials.
So did Vanessa.
She stopped moving.
For the first time since we had sat down, she looked genuinely frightened.
“Where did you get that?” she asked.
Ethan looked at her.
“Mark gave it to me.”
Mark's face tightened.
Vanessa turned toward her husband.
“Mark?”
He didn't answer immediately.
I looked from one to the other.
“What is this?”
Vanessa reached across the table.
“Leah, give it to me.”
I pulled my hand away before she could touch it.
“Why?”
“Because I know what it is.”
“Then tell me.”
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Ethan looked at me.
“You should read it.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
The word came too quickly.
Too sharply.
I stared at her.
“Why not?”
“It isn't what you think.”
“I haven't said what I think.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain it.”
She looked toward Mark again.
He finally raised his eyes.
“Vanessa.”
There was something in his voice I had never heard before.
Not anger.
A warning.
She turned on him.
“You promised me.”
Mark swallowed.
“I promised I wouldn't say anything before today.”
“And you gave it to Ethan.”
“I gave it to the person who needed to have it.”
The diner seemed to go silent around us.
I looked at Ethan.
“What is going on?”
He slid the envelope across the table.
“I didn't open it.”
“You didn't?”
“No.”
He tapped the edge lightly.
“Mark gave it to me this morning and told me it belonged in your hands.”
My fingers felt cold.
I picked up the envelope.
It was heavier than it looked.
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“Leah, please.”
That stopped me.
Not because she asked.
Because of the word she had used.
Please.
Vanessa almost never pleaded.
She negotiated.
She persuaded.
She pressured.
But she didn't plead.
I looked at her.
“Why are you scared of a letter?”
She lowered herself back into her chair.
“I am not scared.”
“You look scared.”
“I'm worried about you.”
“That's not the same thing.”
She pressed her lips together.
Ethan said nothing.
Mark stared at the tabletop.
I turned the envelope over.
The flap had been sealed.
There was a small crease along one corner, as if someone had handled it several times.
I looked at Mark.
“Did Julian give this to you?”
Mark hesitated.
“Yes.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I felt a chill move through me.
“When?”
“This morning.”
“Where?”
“His office.”
Vanessa immediately said, “Mark, stop.”
He looked at her.
“You've had three years.”
Her face changed.
I heard the words but didn't understand them.
“Three years for what?”
Neither answered.
I looked at Ethan.
He seemed just as unsettled as I was.
Then Mark spoke.
“Open it.”
Vanessa stood again.
“No.”
Her voice cracked this time.
I looked at her.
“You've spent three years telling me Julian was the man I should have married.”
She didn't respond.
“You've spent three years comparing him to Ethan.”
Still nothing.
“You've spent three years telling me that Ethan couldn't give me enough.”
Vanessa's eyes filled with something I couldn't identify.
Regret, perhaps.
Or fear.
I lowered my gaze to the envelope.
Then I broke the seal.
Inside was a single folded sheet of heavy cream paper.
There was also a smaller card.
I pulled out the card first.
Julian's handwriting was unmistakable.
I had seen it on invitations Vanessa had received.
The message was short.
My eyes moved across the first line.
Then stopped.
I read it again.
My pulse began to pound.
“What does it say?” Ethan asked.
I couldn't answer.
Vanessa whispered my name.
“Leah.”
I looked up.
For the first time in years, she wasn't looking at me like a younger sister who needed guidance.
She looked like someone waiting for a door to close.
I unfolded the larger sheet.
The first sentence made my hands tremble.
It explained why Julian had never stopped appearing in Vanessa's conversations.
It explained why Vanessa had pushed me toward him.
And it explained why Mark had finally decided that today was the day I needed to know the truth.
