PART 11 – The Person Watching Ethan Was Closer to Our Family Than We Realized, and One Forgotten Conversation Changed Everything

The following morning, Daniel sent us copies of every document he could legally share.

I spread them across our dining table.

Ethan stood beside me.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

There were dates.

Account numbers.

Company names.

Old correspondence.

Nothing looked dramatic by itself.

Together, they formed a pattern.

The same names appeared repeatedly.

Gregory Hale.

Ethan's former business partner.

Prescott Advisory.

A temporary foundation account.

And, unexpectedly, Mark's investment firm.

I looked at Ethan.

“Why is Mark's company here?”

He frowned.

“I don't know.”

We called Mark.

He arrived less than an hour later.

Vanessa came with him.

I almost told her not to.

Then I decided I was done making decisions based on what information might upset someone.

Mark sat at the table.

He looked through the documents.

“I don't recognize this account.”

“It was opened under your firm's umbrella,” Daniel explained over speakerphone.

Mark shook his head.

“That doesn't mean I opened it.”

“Who had access?”

“Several people.”

“Who specifically?”

Mark began listing names.

Then stopped.

“There was one person.”

“Who?”

“A former financial administrator.”

“What happened to him?”

“He resigned.”

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

I looked at the date.

It matched the period when Vanessa first began investigating Ethan.

“What was his name?”

Mark told us.

Ethan went pale.

“I know him.”

Everyone looked at him.

“He worked with Gregory.”

Mark frowned.

“How?”

“He handled some of our old accounts.”

Daniel's voice came through the phone.

“That's important.”

Ethan stared at the documents.

“I thought he disappeared after the company collapsed.”

“He didn't,” Daniel said.

“Where is he?”

“We're trying to find him.”

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“I remember him.”

I looked at her.

“You do?”

“He was at the charity dinner where I introduced Leah to Julian.”

The room went silent.

I remembered that night.

The crowded ballroom.

The champagne.

Vanessa's hand on my shoulder.

Julian standing beside her.

A man had approached Vanessa during the evening.

She had spoken with him for several minutes.

I had forgotten.

“Who was he?” I asked.

Vanessa gave his name.

It was the same name Mark had just mentioned.

I felt a chill.

“You knew him.”

“I knew who he was.”

“Did he know about Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“You spoke to him that night.”

“Yes.”

“What did he ask you?”

She thought.

“He asked whether Ethan was the man you were dating.”

I stared at her.

“And what did you say?”

“That I hoped he wouldn't be.”

Ethan looked away.

Vanessa immediately said, “I didn't know what he was doing.”

“I believe you.”

She looked surprised.

“But you still gave him information.”

“I didn't give him anything.”

“Did you tell him Ethan was in debt?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

Another piece.

Another unnecessary disclosure.

Daniel asked, “Did he ever contact you afterward?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Once.”

“When?”

“A few weeks later.”

“What did he want?”

“He asked whether Leah was still seeing Ethan.”

My hands went cold.

“What did you say?”

“That she was.”

“Anything else?”

“I told him I was trying to change her mind.”

Daniel was silent.

Mark looked at Vanessa.

“You never told me this.”

“I was ashamed.”

Ethan leaned back.

“So many people knew about my life.”

I reached for his hand.

He held mine.

Daniel said, “That may explain how the settlement information was obtained.”

“How?”

“Someone close to the financial records had access.”

He paused.

“And someone close to Vanessa provided the personal context.”

I looked at her.

She understood immediately.

“I didn't know.”

“No,” I said. “But you helped create the trail.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

That afternoon, Julian called.

He asked to meet me alone.

I told Ethan.

He said he trusted me.

We met at a quiet café.

Julian arrived without an entourage.

He looked tired.

“I owe you an explanation,” he said.

“I thought you already gave me one.”

“Not about everything.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“I found this after the wedding.”

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a letter addressed to Vanessa.

It had never been sent.

“What is it?”

“I wrote it three years ago.”

“Why didn't you send it?”

“Because I thought she would eventually stop.”

I read the first paragraph.

Julian had warned Vanessa that investigating Ethan would become unethical if she continued after finding nothing.

He had also warned her that someone else might misuse the information.

I looked up.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Who?”

“I didn't know.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't want to become part of your relationship.”

I stared at him.

“You became part of it anyway.”

“Yes.”

He accepted that.

“I made mistakes too.”

“Which ones?”

“I allowed Vanessa to believe I would help her.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“But you kept talking to her.”

“I was trying to understand why she was so determined.”

“And?”

“I thought it was fear.”

He looked down.

“I was right.”

That didn't excuse anything.

But it helped me understand the strange position Julian had occupied.

He had been wealthy enough to become the solution in Vanessa's imagination.

But he had never asked to be.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why meet?”

He looked at me.

“Because the person behind the financial records may have known about Nora.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“What does that mean?”

“He wasn't only looking at Ethan's business.”

“He was looking at the hospital account.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Julian slid another paper toward me.

It was an old hospital authorization form.

Ethan's name appeared at the bottom.

So did another signature.

I recognized the signature immediately.

It belonged to the former financial administrator.

I stared at it.

“He had access to Nora's account?”

“Apparently.”

“Why?”

Julian shook his head.

“That is what I am trying to find out.”

I photographed the document and sent it to Ethan.

His reply came almost immediately.

Call me.

I did.

“What happened?” I asked.

His voice sounded strained.

“I remember something.”

“What?”

“The administrator came to the hospital once.”

“Why?”

“He said he needed me to sign something.”

“Did you?”

“I thought it was related to the billing correction.”

“What did he give you?”

“I don't remember.”

I looked at the document again.

“Ethan.”

“Yes?”

“The signature isn't yours.”

Silence.

“What?”

“The authorization form has your name, but that signature isn't yours.”

His breathing changed.

“Leah.”

“What?”

“I never signed that.”

I stared at Julian.

He looked equally stunned.

Ethan continued.

“I remember that day.”

“What happened?”

“I was outside Nora's room.”

He paused.

“The administrator came out holding a folder.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me everything had been taken care of.”

My heart began pounding.

“Did you ask him what that meant?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He said I wouldn't have to worry about the account anymore.”

I looked at Julian.

The hospital account.

The settlement.

The foundation.

The missing money.

The false signature.

They were no longer separate mysteries.

They were connected.

But there was one thing none of us had noticed.

The authorization form was dated two days before Julian's foundation made its emergency payment.

And beside the false signature was a handwritten note.

I read it aloud.

“Transfer approved by family representative.”

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“I never approved anything.”

Mark looked at her.

“No one said you did.”

But Vanessa was staring at the paper.

“I know that handwriting.”

I looked at her.

“Whose?”

She didn't answer.

Her face had gone completely white.
