PART 14 – The Missing Page Named Someone I Had Trusted, And Suddenly My Mother’s Silence Finally Made Sense

Daniel put the hospital administrator on speaker.

A woman's voice came through the phone, careful and professional. She explained that the missing page had been found inside an archived legal folder that had been incorrectly filed under another patient's reference number.

“Read it,” Daniel said.

There was a pause.

Then she began.

Margaret Hale had written that she had personally refused to authorize any transfer involving Ethan's account. She believed someone had attempted to create a false connection between charitable medical assistance and a separate financial settlement.

I closed my eyes.

My mother had understood the problem.

The administrator continued.

Margaret had given copies of the supporting records to “a trusted financial professional outside the hospital.”

Daniel asked for the name.

The woman hesitated.

“It was partially obscured.”

“What's visible?”

“Richard Cole.”

Mark immediately turned around.

“Richard.”

I recognized the name.

The former financial administrator who had once worked under Mark's firm's umbrella.

Daniel asked whether there was more.

The administrator said there was a handwritten note beside Richard's name.

“Do not allow Gregory to access the original.”

Ethan whispered, “So Mom knew Gregory wanted it.”

“Yes,” Daniel said.

Vanessa looked sick.

“I remember Richard.”

I turned toward her.

“From where?”

“The charity dinner.”

The dinner where Vanessa had first introduced me to Julian.

The memory came back.

Richard had approached us briefly that evening. He had asked whether Ethan was my boyfriend.

At the time, I had thought nothing of it.

Vanessa had answered for me.

She had told him Ethan was struggling financially.

I looked at her.

“You told Richard too.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted someone to tell me whether Ethan was financially safe.”

Ethan's face tightened.

“You hired people to investigate me.”

“I know.”

Daniel asked, “Did Richard ever give you documents?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

“Old invoices. Account records. Settlement information.”

“Did you keep them?”

“No.”

“Who gave them to you?”

“Gregory.”

That word seemed to hang in the room.

Mark sat down.

“This is getting worse.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not necessarily. It's getting clearer.”

He explained that Richard had access to several systems. Gregory had access to legal and financial contacts. Vanessa had supplied personal information. Julian had been approached as a potential influence. My mother had discovered the pattern and tried to stop it.

“But where does the money fit?” I asked.

Daniel opened the spreadsheet again.

“The money appears to have moved through several legitimate accounts before reaching a holding account associated with Gregory.”

“And my mother's donation?”

“Part of the same network, but not necessarily part of the wrongdoing.”

Ethan stared at the figures.

“So her donation helped Nora.”

“Yes.”

“But someone used that system to move other money.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa whispered, “And my fear about Ethan gave them a reason to keep everything hidden.”

Nobody corrected her.

Then Julian's name appeared on Daniel's screen.

He had sent a new message.

“He wants to meet.”

We met Julian the next morning in a quiet office away from the hospital.

He looked at the documents Daniel brought.

“I was afraid this would happen,” he said.

I stared at him.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“You knew my mother had filed a complaint?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she asked me not to.”

I felt anger rising.

“She was trying to protect me.”

“Yes.”

“But she left me without the truth.”

Julian nodded.

“She believed telling you would put you directly in the middle of it.”

He reached into his briefcase.

“I have something you should have received three years ago.”

He placed an envelope on the table.

My mother's handwriting appeared on the front.

Vanessa stared at it.

“Another letter?”

Julian nodded.

“This was sent to me before I agreed to help Vanessa investigate Ethan.”

I opened it.

My mother wrote that she knew Vanessa was frightened by Ethan's financial situation. She asked Julian not to use any information obtained from Gregory because she believed Gregory was manipulating the situation.

Then she wrote:

“Vanessa is not the enemy Leah thinks she is.”

Vanessa started crying.

Julian continued.

“Your mother believed Vanessa could still stop.”

I looked at my sister.

“Did you?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Julian's voice remained calm.

“She also believed Ethan was being judged on circumstances he didn't create.”

Ethan looked down.

The letter mentioned Nora.

My mother had written that Ethan had sacrificed his own financial security for his sister's treatment and that she had personally seen how hard he worked.

“She believed you,” I said to Ethan.

He swallowed.

“She knew.”

Julian nodded.

Then he showed Daniel another document.

It was from Richard.

A note addressed to Gregory.

“Prescott refuses to cooperate. Vanessa remains convinced Ethan is hiding assets. Continue through the administrator.”

Daniel read it twice.

“That's significant.”

Julian nodded.

“I refused to participate because I realized the information I was being given wasn't clean.”

I looked at him.

“That's why you sent the envelope on my wedding morning.”

“Yes.”

“You didn't want me to marry you.”

“No.”

“You wanted me to know.”

“Yes.”

He looked at Ethan.

“And I wanted him to know too.”

Ethan nodded.

“Thank you.”

Julian looked uncomfortable with the gratitude.

“I wasn't trying to win anything.”

Daniel asked about Richard.

Julian's expression changed.

“I haven't heard from him in years.”

“But he kept copies.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Mark's phone rang.

He listened.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Richard resigned four years ago.”

“We know.”

“He left after someone accused him of mishandling client records.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who accused him?”

Mark answered.

“Gregory.”

The room fell silent.

Daniel immediately asked for the old personnel file.

Mark pulled it up.

Richard had resigned voluntarily.

But attached to the resignation was a confidential settlement.

The reason wasn't misconduct.

It was a dispute over unauthorized access.

Daniel looked at the date.

It was only weeks before Nora's final hospitalization.

I felt my stomach twist.

“Richard wasn't fired because he stole money.”

“No,” Mark said.

“He left because he knew something.”

“That's possible.”

Julian leaned back.

“Then find him.”

Daniel nodded.

“We will.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“I should tell you everything I remember.”

I waited.

She said Gregory had once told her that Ethan's settlement was “complicated” and that she shouldn't ask questions about where the money was held.

“He told me if Ethan ever received it, he would stop being vulnerable.”

Daniel wrote that down.

“When did he say that?”

“Three years ago.”

“Before the wedding?”

“Yes.”

“Before you introduced Julian to Leah?”

Vanessa nodded.

“And after my mother wrote her complaint.”

“Yes.”

The timeline suddenly locked into place.

My mother had complained.

Richard had access to the records.

Gregory had reason to keep the complaint hidden.

Vanessa had unknowingly supplied information.

Julian had refused to cooperate.

And Ethan had been left believing he had simply lost money because of Nora's illness.

Then Daniel found one final entry.

A transfer had been made from the settlement holding account.

It had happened two days after my mother submitted her complaint.

The destination wasn't Gregory.

It was an account in Richard's name.

Everyone stared.

Mark said, “That doesn't make sense.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. It doesn't.”

Ethan stood.

“Then maybe Richard wasn't protecting Mom.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Maybe.”

The room went quiet.

Because for the first time, we had a record showing Richard himself had received money connected to the settlement.

And if Richard had taken that money, my mother's warning might have been protecting me from more than Gregory.
