PART 18 – The First Transfer Was Authorized By Someone We Never Suspected, And The Settlement Records Forced My Sister To Face Her Own Part In The Plan

The room seemed to shrink around us.

“Who signed it?” Ethan asked.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“That's in the original accounting file.”

Daniel opened the sealed packet again.

He removed a transfer authorization dated several years earlier.

The signature belonged to a financial officer connected to the hospital foundation.

But beneath the signature was a handwritten instruction.

“Proceed per family request.”

My heart began pounding.

“Family request?”

Richard nodded.

“Your mother never made that request.”

Ethan stared at the paper.

“Then who did?”

Richard's answer was quiet.

“Vanessa.”

I couldn't speak.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“That's not proof that she authorized the transfer. Her name may have been used.”

Richard nodded.

“That's what your mother believed.”

Ethan looked at me.

“We need to talk to her.”

Vanessa arrived less than an hour later.

She looked frightened before anyone had even told her what we found.

Daniel placed the document in front of her.

“Have you ever seen this?”

Vanessa stared at it.

“No.”

“Did you ever ask the hospital foundation to transfer money?”

“No.”

“Did you ever use your mother's name to authorize anything?”

“No.”

Richard watched her carefully.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I swear.”

I believed that she believed what she was saying.

But the signature was still there.

Daniel asked when she had first spoken to Gregory about Ethan.

“Four years ago.”

“Did he ever ask you to sign anything?”

“He gave me papers.”

“What kind?”

“I don't remember.”

“Try.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“There was a form about financial authorization.”

Ethan looked up.

“What authorization?”

“I thought it was only permission to obtain information about you.”

Daniel asked, “Did you sign it?”

“I signed something.”

“What did it say?”

“I don't know.”

Silence filled the room.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I was angry. I thought I was protecting you.”

Ethan's voice was quiet.

“And Gregory knew that.”

“Yes.”

Richard spoke.

“He probably used the form as the foundation for the first transfer.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“But I never authorized money.”

“You may not have known what you were signing.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is why we need the original.”

Mark suddenly remembered something.

“The document from the charity dinner.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“What document?”

“The one Gregory gave you.”

“I threw it away.”

“Did you?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Daniel asked where she kept personal papers at that time.

“At my old house.”

“Do you still own it?”

“No. But I know the storage company where my old files were sent.”

We left immediately.

The storage unit contained boxes of old tax records, photographs, and correspondence.

Vanessa opened one box.

Then another.

Finally, she found a folder with Gregory's handwriting.

Inside was the authorization form.

Daniel read it.

His face changed.

“This isn't permission to obtain information.”

“What is it?” Vanessa asked.

“It gives a designated representative authority to communicate with the foundation regarding financial assistance.”

Vanessa stared.

“I didn't understand that.”

“I know.”

“But I signed it.”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked away.

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't know.”

Richard spoke gently.

“That may be true.”

Daniel compared the signature with the transfer authorization.

They weren't identical.

“Someone used Vanessa's authorization to make the transfer,” he said.

“So I'm not the one who moved the money.”

“No.”

“But my signature gave them access.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa sat on the floor.

I knelt beside her.

She looked at me.

“I thought I was helping you.”

“You were trying to control my decision.”

“I know.”

“But you didn't steal the money.”

“No.”

“That matters.”

She nodded through her tears.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“There's another document.”

He pointed to the folder.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

“Authorization obtained through family representative. Further instructions from G.H.”

Gregory Hale.

Daniel photographed it.

“This is enough to connect Gregory to the use of Vanessa's authorization.”

Ethan looked at the documents.

“What about Richard?”

“Richard's records show he refused further access.”

“And Mom?”

“She complained.”

“And Julian?”

“He refused to participate.”

Ethan exhaled.

“So everyone who tried to stop it got pushed out.”

Richard nodded.

“That was the pattern.”

Daniel then found another transfer.

It was made after the first one.

This time the instruction came from Gregory's office.

The amount was larger.

But the destination was not Gregory's company.

It was a holding account connected to Ethan's settlement.

Daniel traced the next movement.

Then another.

The trail eventually reached a dormant corporate account.

The account had been opened under the name of a consulting company.

“Prescott Advisory,” Mark said.

Julian stepped forward.

“That isn't mine.”

“We know,” Daniel said.

Richard explained that Gregory had deliberately used names associated with wealthy families because those names attracted less scrutiny.

Julian's reputation had been useful.

So had Vanessa's.

So had my mother's family trust.

Ethan's settlement had simply been the source they needed to disguise.

Daniel reached the final transaction.

The money was still there.

Not all of it.

But enough.

Ethan stared at the number.

“How much?”

Daniel told him.

Ethan sat down.

It was more than he had ever expected to recover.

Vanessa covered her face.

“That's the money you should have had.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Before I sold everything for Nora.”

She began crying harder.

“I know.”

Ethan's voice softened.

“I don't blame you for Nora.”

Vanessa looked up.

“But I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I hurt Leah.”

“Yes.”

“I can't undo it.”

“No.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

Daniel closed the file.

“The court will determine what happens to the funds.”

Richard looked relieved.

“There is still one question.”

“What?”

“Who gave Gregory the original settlement information?”

Daniel checked the records.

The answer was an attorney connected to Ethan's former business partner.

Ethan recognized the name.

“Gregory's old attorney.”

“Yes.”

“So the whole thing began with my former partner.”

“Possibly.”

Richard shook his head.

“Not exactly.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The former partner supplied the records. Gregory saw what could be done with them.”

“And then?”

“Then he needed someone who could create a reason for the money to move.”

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“She gave him the reason.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“My pressure on Leah.”

“Yes.”

“And the hospital account.”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan's financial problems.”

“Yes.”

She whispered, “I built the trap without knowing it was a trap.”

I looked at her.

“You didn't build it alone.”

She looked at me.

“You still have every right to be angry.”

“I am.”

“But?”

“But I finally understand why Mom wrote that you weren't the enemy.”

Vanessa began crying again.

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Then he looked at Ethan.

“The court has frozen all related accounts pending the accounting.”

Ethan nodded.

“And Gregory?”

“His attorney has been notified.”

Richard suddenly looked alarmed.

“Then he'll know.”

“Know what?”

“That we have the documents.”

Daniel nodded.

Richard looked toward the window.

“Then he'll try to reach the only person who can still explain the missing transfer.”

“Who?”

Richard's answer came slowly.

“The attorney who handled the original settlement.”

Mark's face changed.

“I know where his office is.”

Richard shook his head.

“He hasn't practiced there in years.”

Daniel asked, “Then where is he?”

Richard looked at him.

“He works for Gregory now.”
